The Battle for Archie

Postby mrorangesoda » Sun Apr 15, 2012 12:07 pm

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/15/nyregion/the-battle-for-a-comic-empire-that-archie-built.html?_r=1&smid=tw-nytimes&seid=auto

Nytimes update of the ongoing fight between the co-CEOs at Archie Comics. It's all sad and while it'd be nice to not feel the need to take a side, anyone opposed to Kevin Keller and Life with Archie is an idiot.

I hope DC gets the heroes. The MLJ/Red Circle/Mighty characters could fold in nicely. Also, DC should buy Lancelot Strong off of Joe Simon's estate.

Archie can go to Marvel.

Why would you hope for that?

No you don't. Have you actually sat down and compared what DC did with those characters and what Archie is doing with them this time? Unless the execution of the latter is a complete disaster, Archie has already surpassed DC's miserable effort.

I'm not even going to comment on your last two points.

DC owns most of the golden age characters that are not public domain. Adding them to the mix means one hell of a revived All-Star Squadron.

I did see, it was okay but yes, it could have been far better. I prefer to see them as they are, golden age and silver age characters within the DCU... the real not nu... they'd fit.

Archie is doing something with them? What more jokey stuff with Archie? :smt011

And what of the current Earth 2 (hell most of DC's current output) makes you think that an All-Star Squadron would even be worth the 3 - 4 dollars you'll have to shell out to own the floppies?

No, the present DCU is not going to last forever, so there's hope for the future. That and at least maybe reprints of the classic stuff.

Who said I'd pay for it?

Here's a good place to start. Like I said in my last post, Archie could totally fuck this up and it could suck like no one's business, but you can't deny the efforts. Especially from a business and distribution standpoint.

Yes, "fold in nicely"... like they did THE LAST TIME!! :smt011

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: The last thing Dan and the Gang needs is to run out and get MORE characters to ruin.

Ahhh, yeah, they always go for a young as possible crowd. The Archie reading crowd is not the same as that that would read hero titles. They never seem to really understand that or for long at all if they do.

Replace Dan with a rotted, gnarled tree, and it'll work better than the previous take. :P

The problem remains that he currently isn't going anywhere, and while he's there, the Archie heroes -- and any other characters -- are better off safely out of his grasp.
