The Finals: Orion vs Thanos

Postby BubbaKanoosh » Mon Nov 29, 2010 10:44 pm

First off, I want to congratulate Jude, Poolman, and Blue Streak for there nomination of Thanos makingf to the finals. Two of the three of you have sent me your theme ideas for the next Arema (the third has been PMed about it). Now, to see who the winner is I will need you to roll a 1d100 (using the dice feature *points to the button on the second row of posting features*) to determine who is the winner. The highest number wins.

Image

The Rules: Each of the combatants minds have been wiped by the Grandmaster. They have no knowledge about their opponent at all, be it the their name, their power level, their skillset, etc etc etc. So for example, later in the tourney if Hal Jordan fights Sinestro, John Stewart, or Cyborg Superman it will be treated as their first meeting and will know absolutely nothing of who he is fighting and vice versa.. The combatants will start exactly 1000 yards from each other and will only know the general direction of which there is ie: North, East, South, West, Up or Down.

All power rings have lost the ability to identify who their opponents are.

Location: The location is a amalgamation of the Negative Zone and Apokolips. The skies are mix between blood red and deep purple, and are filled with thousands of floating astroids ranging from 30 to 200 yards in diameter. Each of these astroids all have the physical features/characteristic of Apokolips. Metal debree, fire pits, and large smoke stacks that emit jet black smoke into the sky. Each asteroid has gravity equiv. to Earth but the gravity between each asteroid a lot lighter so those in the tourney who cannot fly can make it to asteroid to asteroid.easily.

Thanos.

The day Thanos loses to a guy on a space Segway is the day I stop reading comics.

Hmm Orion killed Darkseid but Thanos killed an entire Universe.

I'll go with Thanos.

Thanos :-D

He is far smarter, more vicious and more resistant.
In fact, the only thing Orion has advantage is on his Mother Box... until Thanos finds out and puts his technology against himself.

Also, Thanos will put Orion on a berserker rage, and when that happens, he will simply outsmart him.

Thanos wins the arena! :-D

*And trust me guys, my scenario for the next arena is quite cool :P

Thanos as he was in the Thanos Imperative is so overpowered it isn't funny. To use a New Gods analogy, right now he's like Highfather and Metron rolled into one. Orion isn't going to be able to win this one. He's going to be out fought and out thought.

Thanos takes this.

Sorry I missed most of the rest of the Arena.

Anyway, in the fight between Thanos and Orion, we're going to see a real battle of brains vs. brawn. Orion is a guy who, on top of being a war-hardened soldier and crack fighter in his own right, can summon a hell of a lot of power on his own. I mean, this is a guy who went toe-to-toe with Darkseid, who could either atomize an opponent or send them falling through time by looking at them really hard, and beat him in a straight up fight. I love Thanos to death (look mom, I made a pun), but you have to give Orion his due. To be frank, Thanos was killed by a guy much weaker by comparison than Orion. Plus, as Poolman pointed out, he is going to have his Motherbox with him. That's going to be something which can be brought to bear.

That all being said, Thanos is neither a slouch in his own right nor an idiot. In fact, I dare say in a battle of wit between the two, Thanos wins out of the starting gate. Here's a guy who figured out massive applications to items long in existence that no one had thought of before in using them. On top of that, he figured out a way to get Galactus over a barrel and how to bring death to a universe where everything was in a constant state of growth. The man's one slick mofo.

But here's where Thanos gets the edge - and it is an important edge. It's all in the philosophy. See, Orion is all about winning and winning straight-out. He's going to want to do battle with Thanos and beat him with all of the righteous indignation that he can muster. Thanos, on the other hand, has always had a very different definition of victory. He's willing to kill everything in the universe just to achieve his aims. Hell, he's proven numerous times that he's willing to suicide to achieve some ultimate aim.

It's analogous to the problem facing many of the soldiers in the Middle East right now. How do you beat someone who, if you kill them, they get what they want and are seen as heroes and if you don't, will kill you and get seen as heroes? Orion could probably beat Thanos every day of the week in an arm-wrestling contest, but that's not going to matter if the guy whose arm you just pushed to the table was just waiting for the chance to kick you in the nuts under the table while you were closing in on victory.

Thanos wins this by completely changing the game and thinking in a much larger scale than ol' Orion.
