Question to folks advocating one of the less popular options- other than arguably Simonson's Orion run, have the New Gods ever been handled well post-Kirby?

I read it bout a year after it came out, I didn't mind it. I was out of comucs for close to 13 years when I read it.

I remember being more shocked that Hawkmans wings were on a harness (I really was only into Batman and early a outsiders when it came to DC)mthen I was the rape.

I still don't understand all the hate. I loved DC comics then, all the stuff that was pre-Infinite Crisis was gold.

Other things I would add would be:

-Didio ruining the Outsiders book by turning Geo Force into a deranged asshole and making making his wife Denise into an evil monster mutant
-Replacing Jean Paul Valley with a shitty replacement known as Michael Lane and then bringing him back as a Black Lantern zombie for only two panels
-Making Barbera Gordon Batgirl again
-Merging the Wildstorm Universe with the DC Universe during Flashpoint
-Allowing Morrisson to turn Talia into a psycho evil bitch
-Undoing Lois and Clark's marriage
-Allowing Lobdell to make Starfire into an alien bimbo and turning Roy into Jason Todd's dimwitted sidekick
-The obvious bias against various 90's characters like the New Bloods, the Ravers, Supermen Of America, who have been mostly killed off
-The Superboy Prime retcon punches
-Killing off Tim Drake's dad by one of the shittiest villains ever, namely Captain Boomerang Sr.( Plus bringing him back at the end of Blackest Night was even worst)

And that's why you don't mind it.

Like many readers who came into comics/re-entered comics during the DiDio era, you had little to no attachment to the characters, and thus, nothing to lose. It's easy to excuse ANY poor handling of the characters when you're in that status.

To prove a broader thematic point about the end of the JLA's "innocence", the writer chose to brutalize a powerless female character and construct a nonsense mystery in an attempt to justify it. I don't object to what I think they were trying to do thematically, but they went about it in just about the worst way possible.

I was just coming back to comics when the trade came out (while I was reading a run of JLI, I hadn't read JLE and so had no real connection to the Dibney's). It put me off DC pretty hardcore until someone suggested I read some Greg Rucka stuff.

What did didio do specifically to those creators?

Or they're just not weird people who get over attached to comic characters.

I'd go with that one.

Be honest I think the people who get mad when someone like the female Dr. light gets killed are the people who've masturbated to comics.

I think that's the line we need to draw between people who are weird and not. Personally in my head I've got you, cat scratch, sdischero and Zechs as people who've masturbated to DC comic characters. And I think this is why you get so upset. I think there is a direct co relation with people who voted the heral option and people who haven't had sex for a while.

The Dan Didio era is now 10 years old, but I would say most of it has been a success, despite the endless bitching.

Starting with Identity Crisis, DC was on a roll. I had been a Marvel Zombie most of my comic reading life, but for the first time I was reading more DC than Marvel. IC and 52 were fantastic series that will go down in history.

Now the last few years haven't been as good. DC really fucked it up. Comics haven't really been as good in the last few years. Even Quesada's run has suffered (though is on an upswing in the last year or so thanks to Hickman, Aaron and others).

But even looking at the list above shows how pathetic fanboy bitching is. "Oh no, DC fucked up Stephanie Brown! ZOMG!" Who gives a shit. That's like complaining that they fucked up a salad at McDonald's.

There has been some epic stupidity during Didio's time in charge. Most of it has come in the last 3 years and maybe his time has come to go, but he made DC relevant again. Nobody can change that and I try to look at the awesome stuff at the beginning.

The bitching about Identity Crisis is exactly what I'm talking about.

"Oh no! They fucked up Sue Dibny and the third Robin's dad! Fuck you Didio for destroying these characters that I have grown up with! And rape? That's worse than murder! How dare a supervillain that has killed countless people try and rape! It makes no sense!"

Get a grip.

Identity Crisis did a lot of things. Firstly, it kicked comics off in the direction they've been in for the last 10 years. Summer blockbuster events and shit. I think it was supposed to make DC comics gritty or some shit. In any case, it's goal was to simply destroy the innocence of the last 20-30 years. Had a lame as fuck ending though. But it got the job done and opened the door for DC to compete with Marvel in terms of content.

Up to that point, I always thought DC was the lame duck to Marvel's gritty-as-fuck approach to contemporary superheroes.

Didio and Quesada did a lot for comics in the last decade or so. I think it's a testament to their ability to market the fuck out of shit because they managed to bring me in to comics by introducing me to some good shit, but they also managed to make that good shit so bad that I just wanted to get the fuck out of it. For that reason, as long as those two shitheads are still working in the industry, I won't fuck with Marvel and DC's new shit.

Good writing is supposed to get readers attached to the characters.
But I guess I can't expect you to know that.

Be honest I think the people who get mad when someone like the female Dr. light gets killed are the people who've masturbated to comics.

1. So, why did you drop DC's books, then??
Seems to me you didn't like what was happening in them.

2. The female Dr. Light wasn't killed.
To my non-surprise, this is YET ANOTHER thing that you are utterly uninformed about.

I think that's the line we need to draw between people who are weird and not.

There is no line.
"We're ALL mad here."
Learn to deal with it. :P

Personally in my head I've got you, cat scratch, sdischero and Zechs as people who've masturbated to DC comic characters.

ITT: Twig reveals that he likes to think about guys masturbating to comics.

Again, this is almost understandable in my case. 8)
Still, we DEFINITELY shouldn't know THIS. :P
