The New Titles Cancellation Over/Under Challenge!!

Postby BlueStreak » Tue May 25, 2010 4:57 pm

Hello everyone,

I've been mulling an idea over the last couple of days concerning new titles and how long they last in today's market. After all, for every title like Magog (which just about everyone on the internet saw getting cancelled within a year), there's a title like Nova or Booster Gold which pleasantly exceeds expectations. As a person who always seems to pick up the titles that last 2 years or less (see Captain Britain and MI13, Doctor Voodoo, etc.), I thought it would be fun to come up with over/unders for new (and newish) titles and see how well they hold up in real life.

But what's the point of coming up with arbitrary statistics designed for gambling if there's not a little fun attached? So here's my proposal/challenge: I have a list of about two dozen titles that I'm currently researching to try and figure out exactly how long they'll last. After I post the list, posters who want to play will simply take the list and decide if they think that the titles will last longer or shorter than the issue numbers that I've assigned for it.

Scoring works as followed: For every incorrect answer, the contestant receives no points. For every correct answer, they get 5 points. If a poster believes that an issue will end exactly when I predict, then they'll get 8 points. In addition, participants can choose to make their own prediction. If their prediction is correct, then they'll receive 12 points for being spot on! First person to score 75 points wins.

I even have an awesome prize lined up...namely one currently sold trade of their choice (up to $50) sent to their home along with bragging rights. Basically, as long as I can order it through my bookstore, I'll send it along with my compliments to the winner.

So let me know if this sounds like a cool idea or not. As long as people are willing to play, I'm game for setting this up and running it.

I think that sounds like a cool idea.

This is a bad idea, threads like this only increase the likelihood of cancellations.

I sincerely doubt that playing a game like this would actually impact sales of a title enough to force it into cancellation.

And there's no rule saying you can't be optimistic and vote over for every title on the list.

Sounds like fun.

I just think any discussion like this means someone on here might see that a book is in danger and then decide not to pick it up.

Well, the plan is to include any and all new titles that the big two (and possibly Image and/Dark Horse if I can find the info) put out until the contest is over. My list of existing titles is mainly comprised of books that have come out in the last year or so, not a list of poor selling titles. These include titles that I want to see succeed, like Zatanna.

And being part of a dead pool makes people die faster too. :-D

I'm in.

But you need to give a ton of point if the book doesn't get cancelled.

I'll consider bonus points if I (and most of the participants are way off on a particular title).

But I'm not going to give out points for predicting that Avengers isn't going anywhere.

Outsiders by September or October.

Titans by December unless of course yet another creative shake-up happens.
