DC Treats Female Masters of the Universe Character with Unparalleled Respect

Teela, warrior goddess and captain of Prince Adam's Royal Guard, inexplicably strips down and is immediately struck by a flaming wardrobe.

Source: The Nerdy Bird

Jill Pantozzi, comics blogger extraordinaire, discovered a fantastic example of gender equality in comics in DC's new Masters of the Universe #1.  The scene shows Teela, the captain of Prince Adam's Royal Guard and "warrior goddess" (as described by Mattel), inexplicably strip off her armor in front of Adam and two other characters and storm off in only her underwear.

Of course, like most female characters who strip down to the skivvies, she's promptly hit by a flaming wardrobe next page.

I'm just wondering what in-story reason Teela would have for immediately stripping down in front of her boss (and occasional unrequited romantic interest) and foster father.  I'm also curious what exactly happened to the armor after she stripped it off.  Did she just leave it scattered on the floor of the palace or something?

Anyways, I'm not going to waste my time ranting about how DC has engaged in yet another example of sacrificing story and character for titillation.  I wish this was an exception to the rule.  It's not.

Yeah, because characters designed only to sell action figures deserve respect.

 That whole sequence makes no sense. I wish we could get ahold of the script.

I love Jill's completely unbiased rationale in this line:

"But He-Man walks around half-naked," you say. That’s true, he does. But he’s not illustrated that way to be appealing to the straight, female gaze, he’s illustrated that way to show how powerful he is, just like all the other male superheroes

If she hadn't stripped down to her bra and panties, there'd be no reason for her to go to the wardrobe, so then when it exploded off-panel it wouldn't have made any sense. Why would she go to her wardrobe if she was already fully dressed??

Okay, I have to admit something--I never took a course on Eternia Social Studies, so I'm completely unaware of their female cultural tradition of undressing in the corridor.

Well, if they behave like I remember typical action figures did back in the day, they would pretty quickly all be taking off their clothes and leaving them in the sandbox outside where the stray cats poop for the rest of the summer.

well if she wasn't wearing anything but armor, then taking it off would reveal her underwear... i'm glad that Jill's just getting around to noticing this though even though it happened 3 months ago...

I don't think this counts as "DC doing something stupid" unless Bob Harras, Didio, or Jim Lee make a ham-fisted attempt to defend it.

Harras: 'She got legs. She knows how to choose 'em.'
Didio: Har, har! That she does.
Lee: What these idiots are trying to say is the scene isn't indecent, so just let it go.

It happened 3 months ago, so we're not updating. It's stupid, but it's 3 months ago stupid. :D
