What are your three most recent disappointing comics?

Postby GHERU » Fri May 11, 2012 8:42 am

Lets say, within the past 5 years what comic, trade, HC, whatever were you really looking forward to
and then you read it?

are you still reading it? how long did it take for you to drop?

For me, number one has to go to (not so) Secret Avengers. After 28 issues and three top tier writers nothing remotely interesting or secret has happened. So depressing that its never lived up to its potential. I think, I hope, that 28 was my last pre-ordered issue

Boys: Herogasm/Highland Laddie - horrible minis that barely added to the main book, and should have just been standalone issues, or, at most, one-shots

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight (2007) - I hear that season 9 is better, and it would have to be. With a convoluted story that lasted way too long and art that was so bad I could never really tell who was who, BtvS Se 8 was stressful to read.

what say you?

"all comics written after 1985" and the like are cheap fanboy answers

Regular and New Avengers-I loved the first arc of the Avengers. Hit all the nerd points I love (time travel, Ultron) After that's it's been dull. Bendis is burnt out.

Static Shock-How could they screw this up? Give it John Rozum SOLO to play with. The co-writing stuff lead to really bad stories.

THUNDER Agents-Why did you have to end? :-( I loved what Nick did with the book.

Everyone and their dog told me to read Morning Glories, and I got the hardcover for virtually nothing, and truthfully, I've never been so bored in my life.

I've banged on about Batman for a while, but as long as Snyder keeps pushing this Owl bullshit, I'll keep attacking it,

Rick Remender's current output has been dodgy. Secret Avengers has been boring, and Uncanny X-Force, once they fired Opena off the book, has lurched from one disaster to another.

Action Comics/Superman - I just want a really good Superman book. Is that so hard??

Justice League of America - This teams hasn't been handled well consistenly in over 10 years. DC it's your biggest frigging team book what is your problem?

Avengers/New Avengers - I'm glad Bendis is wrapping things up because I really feel he's been running on fumes for 2 years now.

Wow, I have read so many disappointing comics lately that it is hard for me to just pick 3.

Justice League - Despite the fact that I was dead set against the relaunch and I still am, I really wanted to give Justice League a fair shot. I mean, a creative team like Geoff Johns and Jim Lee should have been an automatic win...until you get the book and you realize that it is absolute garbage. However, I stayed on the title up to the present issue, desperately hoping that it would get better. It didn't and in fact it has only gotten worse. Then, you add in the horrible Shazam back-ups and you have a title that has become completely unreadable. Needless to say, I will not be buying the next issue.

Teen Titans - Another DCnU title that has just been complete garbage. I was really hesitant to actually buy this book to begin with because the character designs were absolutely terrible but I really like the Titans, so I gave it a shot. Like Justice League, I stayed with this comic hoping that it will get better...but upon reading the Annual, I realized something very important about this book. I don't know these characters. Red Robin may be a little familiar but Wonder Girl, Kid Flash, and the rest are so far removed from their Pre-Flashpoint counterparts that I feel like I am reading another company's attempt at a Teen Titans-like comic. Since I have no attachment these characters, I can now safely drop this book and save myself a little cash each month.

Uncanny X-Men - Looking back at my history as a comic fan, I can safely say that I have a trend when it comes to the X-Men. For whatever reason, I have almost always preferred whichever X-Title features Cyclops and his team. That quickly changed when Marvel relaunched Uncanny X-Men after Schism. It has nothing to do with Cyclops or even his team...the title itself was just utter crap. While the title has been improving with the past few issues, it has just been extremely difficult to get rid of the taint of those first couple of arcs.

The anchor. - good idea really sllow and bad execution.

The un-men - noir detective within freak mutant like community... could be so much more.

Avengers forever - worst superhero comics i've never finished...

Honorable mention to Wanted, porno violence

I bought the "Prelude to a Schism" HC thinking I was going to get more depth to why the schism occurred. Well... :smt013 .

I was really hyped up for Hell Ya. Could barely make it through issue #2.

Justice League Dark. This was supposed to be my favorite book this year; it had all my favorite characters. I stuck with it until issue 6; skipping the I, Vamp crossover. I am going to pick it back up now, and try again with the new creative team on the book.

Demon Knights; cool concept but the book went nowhere fast made it to issue #5.

Shadowland. Daredevil had become one of the best and most forward thinking comics of the last few years. Daredevil had fallen trying so hard and pushing himself to the brink. It felt like a new chapter of Daredevils life and opened a ton of potential. What would the heroes do to one of their own once he'd gone too far. Had he gone too far? Every issue of Daredevil for years was amazing.

Till this piece of shit. Ya see we can't actually have a superhero evolve past his set parameters. Now we've run out of great writers for him we have to have him possessed by a shadow demon. Insulting to the readers.

Siege/ start of the heroic age. Well don't say I didn't warn you. After a few years of really interesting story potential and a great run on Dark Avengers, marvel decide to fuck off new and interesting characters like Sentry and Echo and bring back the big three for the 59392834858th time. Captain America's return was woeful and has killed my interest in that book, hawkeye is back to being as boring as ever. They ended a great Thor run prematurely. Overall a big fuck you to forward thinking and potentially a big send off to the last great comics age.

Young Avengers the new series. After a few years out and a really interesting story building Scarlet Witch is back and sound. She only COMMITED GENOCIDE, and tried to alter the world, but now she's infected by some bullshit and is fine. Bullshit. She should be locked up and kept watch over. All story potential with this character is gone, she'll probably stop Thanos soon or something and everything will be forgotten till Avengers Dissasembled 35 in 25 years time.

All insulting to the reader all backwards looking and all produced boring comics in their wake.

highland laddie is a good one. i usually find boys to be pretty entertaining but this was just totally pointless and a chore to read.

the first HC of the new captain america series. hey, i saw inception too.

holy terror - i knew it would be bad but i wasn't prepared for just how idiotic it was.

The guy broke his collarbone. One of the few times when I agreed with that idiot from Larry's comics when he said the damn thing should have been done before it was solicited, but hey, thats Image.

Incredible Hulk - I was really looking forward to this book when I first heard about and then only made it through the first two issues before I dropped it. I think the premise is good but the execution has been god awful, especially the artwork. There has not be good, not even decent artwork on a single issue of this book so far and looking at the artists that are coming up on the book it is not going to get any better any time soon which is very disappointing as I enjoy the Hulk and would really like to be enjoying this book.

Action Comics/Superman - One book is all over the place and the other is about as boring as watching grass grow. I can't say I high really high hopes for the Superman books when the relaunch teams were announced but I did try to give them the benefit of the doubt. Ultimately I was disappointed again and am still waiting for that really good Superman book to come out again.

Avengers just about the whole lot of them over the past 5 years - While there have been some nuggets of goodness to drop from Bendis and various other creators that have worked with the Avenger family of books over the last 5 years, as a whole the line has been nothing but lackluster. After watching the movie it makes me long for a book that could be as awesome as the movie which seem really strange to say out loud because usually it is the exact opposite. Hopefully things get better when Bendis leaves, not that he is bad he has just been at the head of this line for to long and it needs a fresh set of eyes I think.

Uncanny X-Men - This books should and could be great but when they keep having shit stains like Greg Land do the art work it makes it very hard to even try and read this book. Also having a cast of characters that all act like bitches and douchebags doesn't help much either.

Flash - After Geoff Johns first run ended on the book it has just sucked big time, until the DCnU book that is, which is actually one of the better books DC is putting out right now. Mark Waid who did wonders with the book before Johns came back, and it was awful. Then they got rid of Wally and brought a Super Aged Bart in, and that was painful. Nothing they were doing with the character was working, so then they bring back Barry, who should have never been brought back, and not we have no Wally West at all, and that really sucks.

JSA - Used to be one of if not the best teams books out there. Over the last few years of that book it easily became one of the worst. There was absolutely nothing good about that book anymore so there is little wonder as to why it was not part of the DCnU.
