This is true of almost everything Batman is in, though. The same with Superman.

They're better off as foils or sounding boards for the surrounding cast/villains.

Dark Avengers. I bought the first issue out of morbid curiosity and it blew me away.
Wolverine: Origins. The first 20 issues were garbage, but I kept buying them out of curiosity as to what it was leading up to. Then the Deadpool arc was decent. Everything since has been great.
Something that everyone should know: There is no objective good and very little objective bad in entertainment media. Of the objective bad, much of it is unintentionally hilarious which gives it entertainment value for some people. If you understood this then 99% of your petty arguments would never happen. Learn to realize that you have different tastes then the guy you are arguing with and move on. And before someone calls me a hypocrite, notice that I never go in calling something bad. I always go in to defend something.

Conan

Never had any interest whatsoever in sword and sorcery books. Bought the first Dark Horse trade on a whim and I have been hooked for the past year and a half.

I really can't think of anything on my pull list right now that surprised me that much. But if you go back a little bit..

The Order: Even more than Iron Fist (which, at the time, I mostly atributed to Brubaker), this is the book that made me a Fraction fan.

Young Avengers: Anyone who says they knew this book would be that good is either a liar or from the future, and had already read it.

GI Joe Classic Vol 3 by Larry Hama, Mike Vosburg and company
The Mourner by Richard Stark

So true on YA, when it was announced, it was a fucking punchline, and then... it was good. For the first 6 issues at least.

My only problem with Lovecraft was the art. At parts it was smooth and pretty and in other parts it was real scratchy.

Just got the Mice Templar sketchbook, glad to see the guy that's helping out on art duties is really good.

Same here, after their limited series from a few years ago sold so poorly, I didn't think I'd read another series about them again.

I'm glad I was wrong with that thought. :)
