What Digital Comic are you Reading Right Now?

Postby S.F. Jude Terror » Mon Nov 21, 2011 12:58 pm

Onward into the digital age!

I'm reading Marvel Knights. Just finished the first issue. This was a really fun book back in the early 2000s, running for (I think) 18 issues and putting a bunch of Marvel heroes together in a fast paced story. I like books like this that showcase some of the less spotlighted characters and give the Marvel U a feel that it's one big place where all these characters constantly run into each other.

I downloaded my free copy of Avenging Spider-Man onto my dad's iPhone, and it was OK, but the reading experience was hollow to me.

I don't think the size is the issue.

So I finished Marvel Knights. What a great series. Crazy how Queswdq cancelled it and then said that stuff about getting rid of old comics writers. I found a bologna post from Chuck Dixon from that time that gave a scarily accurate assessment of the comic industry and prediction about the future of it. I wonder - did Joe Q kill comics?

After that I read the Daughters of the Dragon mini from 2006. Next I think I will read Nextwave.

Stop fooling yourself. Books stopped being special when they stopped being hand copier by monks. They may be on paper, but they're still mass produced by machine by some corporation (and more hilariously, the files they print from are digital). Clinging to the idea that digital reading somehow diminishes the experience is a fake construction of your own misconceptions and ignorance. "I like to.feel the pages turn, gordammit! Books have a soul! The earth revolves around the sun! Kids these days and their rock n roll music!" Pathetic.

Get over yourselves digital haters. Screen or paper, the art and story is the same.

red the 4-part "Titans Then and Now" arc from Jurgens's 90s Teen Titans run last night.

i think i've finally decided to stop kidding myself...no matter how much i like his art, Dan Jurgens really is a terribly mediocre comic writer (at best).

Yeah, and why go to the Louvre when you can just google 'Mona Lisa' any time you want.

Now obviously that's an extreme example, but to me, a comic book is more than art and story, it is an artefact with a physical presence, what Barthes would call an 'aura'.
