A lot of people don't like meta-fiction because it tends to get weird and they can't handle it. I wrote a meta-fictional story for a class once and the meta aspect drove my instructor and half the class insane. I used to always do subtle things such as omniscient I comments that would annoy people. Not many people are welcome to it in fiction. It works on a completely different level in comics though (IMO) and that's why it works so well in Animal Man.
