Five books that DC probably should launch

Postby ElijahSnowFan » Wed May 21, 2014 2:06 pm

I don't really understand DC's publishing strategy, with regard to which characters exist and which don't, in the New 52. But this wave of cancellations has me wondering just why in the world DC hasn't launched these titles yet, when we've gotten stuff like "Threshold:"

1. Captain Marvel -- That's gotta be coming soon, right?

2. Cyborg -- Might not sell a ton, but you have to give it a shot at some point, right?

3. Black Lightning -- Maybe it wouldn't last a year, but you gotta give it a shot, right?

4. Atom -- It's sad to me that we saw a character named Atomica before we got Ray Palmer as the Atom

5. Booster Gold -- I'm not even a huge fan of the character, but don't you have to try this one?

I'm in favor of a diverse line, so I certainly applaud DC trying new things, or old things in a new era, like GI Combat and so forth.

But really. Maybe all five of those books wouldn't make it. But wouldn't they have at least a snowball's chance in hell more than Batwing?

*Sniff, sniff* "Damn it, Diana...If I'd known they would trade us in for a JT Krul-written Captain Atom and "The Savage Hawkman," I'd have let Superboy-Prime destroy all reality."

"Superman flies and is really strong...what the fuck else do you need to know?!" -- Hitler, expressing his displeasure about DC rebooting and complaints about continuity

Sadly it'd be called Shazam! and suck it hard as reboot has him being called anything but Captain Marvel and honestly, it ended not in a great continuation of the Magic Marvels that I love and remember.

ElijahSnowFan wrote:2. Cyborg -- Might not sell a ton, but you have to give it a shot at some point, right?

Only if it's handled well. Always a great character that DC has under-used (as with all characters not white).

ElijahSnowFan wrote:3. Black Lightning -- Maybe it wouldn't last a year, but you gotta give it a shot, right?

Sadly, I'd go for this, but like you doubt it would last as DC seems to hate black characters. Consider how the prior series have run.

ElijahSnowFan wrote:4. Atom -- It's sad to me that we saw a character named Atomica before we got Ray Palmer as the Atom

I'd rather see a Ray Palmer and Ryan Choi series and done right. That being a teacher and his protege.

Booster only if they have him travel time to protect as part of the routine.
"Why are you pointing your screwdrivers like that? They're scientific instruments, not water pistols."
"Oh, the pointing again! They're screwdrivers! What are you going to do? Assemble a cabinet at them?"
"Are you capable of speaking without flapping your hands about?"
""Timey" what? "Timey wimey"?"

Damn it...Is that where DC is now, where the only people who can launch shit that might last 12 issues are Johns, Snyder and Lemire?

Huh. I don't know if I'm ready to say DC hates black characters just yet...I understand that there aren't a ton of books featuring title characters who are black, but Batwing did get a long run, Jason Rusch was a separate Firestorm in the relaunch, Mister Terrific did have his own series and is front-and-center in Futures End, John Stewart is headlining Green Lantern Corps...

Now, granted, they could do better. There could always be a little more effort -- does DC still have Vixen as its best black, female character? Do we count Amanda Waller in that? -- but I don't know that I can go so far as to kill them at the moment on it.

I would also include the other kids and call it The Shazams! With each having one of the power trait and when they all combine they were truely be SHAZAM!

ElijahSnowFan wrote:2. Cyborg -- Might not sell a ton, but you have to give it a shot at some point, right?

Cyborg really needs to handle very well.

ElijahSnowFan wrote:3. Black Lightning -- Maybe it wouldn't last a year, but you gotta give it a shot, right?

Why not Black Lightning and Static Shock Duo comic?

ElijahSnowFan wrote:4. Atom -- It's sad to me that we saw a character named Atomica before we got Ray Palmer as the Atom

Both Ryan and Roy call them the ATOMS!

The problem with Batwing is that he is a good character but his audience 'was not large enough for DC' and it didn't help when David the mantle to Luke Fox with whole new and different satus quo compared to David.

Man...this company. I know you care about DC's stable of characters as much as I do, and bitching incessantly doesn't really do any good.

But man. This company. Wow.

This one should be a cinch. Model it after the 2007 series..."the greatest hero you've never heard of". It worked just fine.

If they started all those books tomorrow, you could probably use that same list in about six months for a "Five Books that DC Probably Should Just Cancel" thread.

Even if I don't love the direction, don't you have to be able to sell a Captain Marvel book for 12 issues?

Just to be a viable company, a legitimate company, with all the work that Johns/Frank did...don't you have to be able to sell 12 issues of that?

You can if Johns/Frank are the creative team on the new title.

If you put JT Krul/Eduardo Pansica on the book ... who knows if you can make it past 12?

Sure... they can sell 12 issues of just about anything.
Sell well? Sell well enough to be worth doing? Make it past 12 issues? Probably not...
