SPOILERS

A pretty simple story where Rick and Carl make it to Hilltop. They chat up the locals there. Nothing special.

Meanwhile the newbs meet Negan and nothing happens.

Two patrol guys however have a close encounter and evade some walkers. One leaves the other behind and makes it to Hilltop where he tells his story and just like that...

The Walking Dead comic reinvents itself.

Because now... the dead have started talking!

I had been wondering where this book could go after the Negan War - now I know and I'm hungry for more. Nice move Kirkman.

I loved the change that Kirkman brought from jumping forward. Seeing the interactions of cooperative communities will be fun, and the new folks staring down Negan and calling his bluff was great. That said, I don't think the dead are talking. Largely because the conversation they had did not sound like someone who recently learned how to talk.

I don't think it's what it seemed either. I think there is more too it than what is really going on.

In all likelihood, it probably is a a false swerve, but then I think about where can the book go?

They've restarted civilization, they can handles the walkers (even steer herds away from the towns), they're productive and secure. The only real threat left is their fellow man and do that again so soon after the Negan war just doesn't make sense. The walkers have practically been delegated to bit players. So what's left?

How about thinking walkers that communicate between themselves? It just adds a whole new dynamic and gives the series new life.

I'm kind of hoping it's not a swerve.

Hah, now with #132 turns out-

The dead weren't talking. There is a group that goes around wearing the skin of the dead. All sewed up like costumes. We don't see much of them yet but looks like they walk around with the dead and whisper.

I like it. This is a whole new kinda threat but the book should be renamed the Walking Pretend-Dead.

The moment that I realized what was happening...holy shit it's been a while since this book or any book gave this many chills.
