Hit-Girl # 3 - Mark Millar

Hit-Girl # 3 - Mark Millar
One’s greatest desire is to be desired by the other, said Jacques Lacan once. And although Lacan wasn’t exclusively referring to 12 year-old girls, I think that phrase fits in here quite nicely. As we’ve seen before, Mindy is undefeatable as Hit-Girl, but as a normal child she’s at the mercy of the other: she has no friends at school and she’s humiliated and ridiculed by the ‘cool’ girls.
Her greatest desired is to be desired by her peers, or rather, to be admired or at least accepted. She has been putting a lot of effort into it. Taking this challenge as an undercover mission, she has learned everything she needed about clothing, TV series and Justin Bieber. She’s ready to be a normal girl, however she finds that her main rival is merciless. Mockeries about her look are now replaced by mockeries about how she’s so desperately trying to change her appearance. One way or another, Mindy can’t win. Her desire of being desired cannot be fulfilled.

So the question is how far would you -or any of us for that matter- go to gain acceptance? Mindy has lost her patience, and finally she decides to be a little bit more Hit-Girl and a little less girlish about this situation. She electrocutes her rival, ties her up and throws her on a garbage truck. And to top it all, she makes one final warning: she is to be accepted now, she is to become the alpha female, she is, in the end, to be desired by all the cool girls in her class. Apparently, her gambit has paid off.

Red Mist in trouble / Red Mist en problemas

Meanwhile, Red Mist has other concerns in his head. First of all, he wants to avenge his father’s death by killing Kick-Ass. However, it becomes painfully obvious that he’s not up to the task yet. He barely survives his first major criminal strike -robbing a grocery store- and he’s forced to leave the country or face the consequences of his delinquent acts. His idea is to imitate Bruce Wayne, to travel around the world and train with the greatest martial artists. By seeking revenge he’s also looking the approval of his father, something which he never obtained when the man was alive. His desire, as a neglected son, is also to be desired by the other.

As in previous issues, John Romita Jr. succeeds in creating the adequate atmosphere for this Kick-Ass spinoff. Certainly, the distinctive style of Romita’s pencils generates a much welcomed sense of unity, filling in the gaps that we might have detected from the end of Kick-Ass volume 1 and the beginning of Kick-Ass volume 2. I should also emphasize the visual strength of Tom Palmer as an inker and the delightful color palette used by Dean White. With only two issues to go it’ll be a surprise to see what happens in the end.

Mindy (Hit-Girl)
