Review:
Sometimes, the hardest thing to do is look back on your life and be satisfied.  When your family happens to be partially responsible for the near destruction of the world, it gets even more difficult.

The rock band Coheed and Cambria have completed five albums worth of a science fiction story that is as complex and fascinating as it is completely impenetrable (there are how many planets?  What's with the dragonfly?  And is that a talking bicycle?).  Frontman Claudio Sanchez brought the story to comics with two volumes of THE AMORY WARS, but somehow that didn't really clear things up for some readers.

IN KEEPING SECRETS OF SILENT EARTH, the third volume of the AMORY series, sees long-time comic book writer Peter David (X-FACTOR, THE INCREDIBLE HULK) come on board as co-writer, and serves to fill readers (both newcomers and old-timers) in on some of the backstory of the sf epic.  It's a melancholy testimonial to the troubles of the past, and an equally troubled relationship between lead character Claudio and his father, Coheed.  Amidst all the sf chaos, ths is a truly human story.  It's an appropriately weighty story that's well told and well rendered by the art team.  The pencils are expressive, and the colors give a great sense of texture.  The body language of the characters looks great and illustrates the emotions of the story.  The level of detail serves to flesh out the world, which is absolutely key to any story, but particularly of one that does not take place in ours.

The two spots where the comic falls short are the two interludes to catch up with other characters and storylines.  They seem oddly placed and really throw the narrative out of whack.  Granted, it's a tough proposition to spend the entire of the first issue of a comic focusing on the past, but somehow, these two scenes do not fit the tone of the comic (in terms of both writing and art), and make for a rather disjointed effort.  Claudio's story is the most compelling part of the book, and it's a shame that the writers break away from it for scenes that just don't work as well.

Overall, THE AMORY WARS: IN KEEPING SECRETS OF SILENT EARTH: 3 #1 works best as a character piece; a somber look at tragedies of the past and a frightening look at chaos to come.  Claudio Sanchez really refined his comic book storytelling chops by co-writing KILL AUDIO, and Peter David has long been one of the finer comic book writers, so it's easy to be optimistic about the rest of this series.
