White Picket Fences takes place between the places of childhood fantasy and paranoia and good old-fashioned patriotism. It is a story about a young boy named Charlie Hobson who sets off a domino effect that leads his little town to be “invaded” by the U.S. army thinking an alien attack is happening. Also, it features a back-up story featuring Captain Odyssey, Charlie’s hero.
The issue’s strength is definitely how Anderson and Hutchins walk a fine line into making this story political but also making it so little kids can get into it and enjoy. While the main focus is on Charlie, there’s also quite a bit of focus on his father who has to deal with a neighbor whose patriotism is a bit more unabashed. Also, there’s a feeling that something else is going on that the writers are purposely keeping you in the dark about. Farritor’s art suits the story perfectly and the light coloring suits Farritor’s art.
I can’t help but enjoy White Picket Fences the more I think about this issue. It could be a political story, it could be a story for kids and it might even be a horror story so it can reach a bigger audience depending on a person’s view of it. However, whatever it is, it’s a very interesting story with much potential.
