Title: Avengers: The Initiative #2
Writer: Dan Slott
Artist: Stefano Caselli
Publisher: Marvel
The trainees are going through a drill at Camp Hammond until Cloud 9’s thoughts about their deceased friend MVP triggers Trauma’s powers and he turns into MVP. Yellowjacket, Justice, and the Gauntlet seperate the incident but then Trauma turns into a battered Wasp but Gauntlet saves Yellowjacket and then trainers decide they need to discuss what happened to Justice.
Afterwards, Hank Pym a.k.a. Yellowjacket meets with Henry Gyrich and Baron Von Blitzschlag to discuss MVP’s corpse. Von Blitzschlag reveals that MVP is a perfect human specimen through “blood und sveat”. Gyrich and Von Blitzschlag want to use MVP’s DNA to help them with the Initiative but Pym wants none of it and Von Blitzschlag tries to coax Pym into helping until a situation arises which calls for the superheroes.
The situation is that Hydra is trying to bomb Crawford, Texas and, more specifically, George W. Bush. The Texas Rangers (no, not the baseball team), Mighy Avengers, and the Initiative are having a bit of trouble until Yellowjacket pulls a “Dr. Strangelove” and rides the main Hydra ship into the others. As YJ gets an award for his act, Trauma gets a new private tutor and Gyrich gets some quality time with the Beast. Awww….
While I thought the first issue was good, Slott turns up the sadistic side of Avengers: The Initiative especially with Baron Von Blitzschlag’s talk to Yellowjacket and Trauma turning into MVP and the Wasp (I still think Trauma’s really a villain). Casselli’s art also seemed to have gotten better. In just a short time, Avengers: The Initiative is turning into a very unique story and one of Marvel’s best books.
To discuss.
