The film great has died at age 91.
Source: IndieWire IndieWire has reported that French filmmaker Chris Marker has passed away.
Marker was a novelist and a documentary filmmaker, but probably his most famous work was his science fiction short film Le Jetee, which was heavily referenced in Terry Gilliam's 12 Monkeys (Marker received a co-writer credit on that film) and in the music video for a David Bowie song. Still, his greatest achievement is 1983's experimental documentary Sans Soleil, one of the best films ever made. A travelogue through Japan and parts of Africa, Sans Soleil demonstrates the pliability of truth and the power of imagery in context.
Marker, born Christian François Bouche-Villeneuve in France, turned ninety-one years old the day before his death.
