Cleveland Rocks for Putting up a Statue of Harvey Pekar

The legendary American Splendor writer will get the tribute he deserves in the city he loved.

Throughout his life and his work, writer Harvey Pekar became almost synonymous with the city of Cleveland.  When he died in 2010, it was big loss to the creative community in the city.  So it's only appropriate that Pekar get a statue dedicated to his memory, and that's exactly what's going to happen on October 14, when a statue, funded by a Kickstarter campaign by the Pekar Estate, will be erected at the Lee Road branch of the Cleveland Heights - University Heights Public Library.  Pekar was a frequent visitor and supporter of the library, so it's appropriate that the statue go up there.

Cleveland.com quotes cartoonist Joyce Brabner, who is Pekar's widow: “That library was Harvey’s first love and second home."  Brabner goes on to say that “[t]his is about our creative community. This whole thing isn’t about a statue of Harvey Pekar,” Brabner said. “It’s about comics as an art form, and the love and passion one man had for the library.”

Pekar is best known for his autobiographical American Splendor series of comics, which were adapted to a feature film in 2003 (Pekar was played by Paul Giamatti).  He worked with legendary cartoonist R. Crumb, as well as with Brabner.  He also worked with artist Dean Haspiel on The Quitter, which was published by Vertigo.

The dedication ceremony for the statue will take place on October 14 at 2:00 pm.

It'd be funny if they modeled it after Paul Giamatti
