The End is Nigh - Gail Simone Gone from Batgirl

The fan-favorite creator has apparently been fired from writing duties on Batgirl. Controversy to ensue.

Source: Bleeding Cool

With the Mayan Apocalypse looming just around the corner, DC Comics, worshippers of the old gods, have been clearing the slate for the destruction of the planet and the end of humanity by holding secret meetings at DC headquarters. Rich Johnston, gossip queen and a man who cannot afford to be made to look ridiculous, reported on these meetings over at Bleeding Cool earlier this week in a series of substantial reports revealing the juicy information that DC was holding meetings, DC was definitely holding meetings, and, for sure, DC held some meetings, and changed their voicemail greeting (really, he reported this).

Now, Johnston is reporting that Gail Simone, writer of the popular and successful Batgirl series, has been fired from the book. Simone launched the Nu52 Batgirl by taking original Batgirl Barbara Gordon out of her wheelchair and relegating toxic OldDCU Batgirls Stephanie Brown and Cassandra Cain to nonexistant status in the new Universe's continuity.

Shortly after Johnston's report, Simone issued the following statement on Twitter:

On Wednesday of last week, new Batgirl editor Brian Cunningham informed me by email that I was no longer the writer of Batgirl.

It is baffling and sad, I will probably have a statement later today or maybe tomorrow.

This confirmation must be vindicating for Johnston, who was the butt of jokes from various internet outlets after his multiple meeting reports this week. It is unknown how Johnston is able to obtain this sort of information before it is officially released, but many believe that Johnston may be an unregistered animagus.

Whatever the case, The Outhouse urges Johnston, Simone, and DC Comics to consider how rude it is to break a story like this on the weekend, when intrepid comics news reporters like myself would prefer to be watching football. It could have waited until Monday, guys. Have some consideration.

We'll keep you updated as the internet loses its shit over this.

It'll probably be the people calling the title mediocre who complain the loudest.

Firing someone over email is a dick move. Meet with them in person or call them on the phone like a grown up.

Might explain why they didn't release the March "Batman" group preview solicits last week. Must be some creative team shifting going on.

Oh, so when I say "So and So fired off book", then you mock me, but when this happens, there's all wailing and moaning.

This is not the first time Simone's been ousted from a book because of "conflicts" with an editor, by the way.

I, for one, cannot WAIT for Jim Starlin's Batgirl. Or Howard Mackie, or, realistically, Tommy DeFalco, since he wormed his way into the bat office with his substandard fill in of Nightwing.

There's a little difference in you saying someone's been fired b/c they move from one book to another (like Snyder from Detective to Batman AND Swamp Thing), and when the creator in question does out and says "I was fired". Moron...

There's a couple of hints that the firing might have to do with Gail refusing to kill a female character (like Barbara's mom) in Batgirl.

Looks like another case where all this could have been sorted if someone had done their job, and done what they were told. Funny how big, bad scary editorial is always the problem

I wonder if they wanted James Jr to kill her, and Gail out of realizing then that she be fridging Babs' mom said no to that listing what Snyder did in Black Mirror just to show that James Jr doesn't need the rep like that to already establish how frightening he can be.
