Valve's Steambox

Newell talks Valve's upcoming console competitor: Steam Box

Source: The Verge

Valve has been busy at CES this week in Las Vegas.  Earlier in the week a small handheld CPU started making the rounds as a "steambox" but the story wasn't quite so simple.  The tiny "Pisten" as it's called is simply a small computer that will have Steam on it.  Though we may see a variety of products aimed at making use of steam and referred to as a steam box, Valve plans to offer their own product.  Gabe Newell sat down with The Verge at CES to talk about their Steam Box.

Here are some highlights from the interview:

  • The Steam Box will be designed to work across multiple screens in the home, using networking standards like Miracast (WiFi), allowing players to enjoy a vareity of content on whichiver monitor and in whatever room meets their needs.
  • Valve's own Steam Box will run on Linux, but Newell said they aren't locking it out, so customers that would rather install windows on it, will easily be able to do so.
  • They don't see using any sort of motion control input, but hope to make use of controllers using biometric data.
  • There will be a normal browser on the Steam Box, so users can also get to features like Neflix.
  • They are examining how to extend into the mobile platform.

You can read the full interview on The Verge, it's lengthy and well worth it. Head on over.

Sounds good, only needs and Xbox-like controller.
