Following the San Francisco 49ers divisional playoff victory over the Green Bay Packers on Saturday, video game manufacturer EA Sports announced that it would be moving forward with a special edition of the next game in its popular Madden franchise tailored specifically toward fans of the 49ers. The game will come with a special edition Xbox 360 or PS3 controller designed for playing as 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
"The controller only has one action button," said an EA Sports executive, explaining that the usual four buttons will be replaced by a single 'pass to Michael Crabtree' button. "We wanted to push the simulation aspects of the game to the next level."
In past versions of the game, when running a passing play, the player could choose from available receivers to pass to by pressing the appropriate button on the controller. Since Kaepernick passes exclusively to Crabtree in real life, it makes sense to simplify things within the video game. The EA executive elaborated:
"We thought about making it so that if you pressed a button for another receiver, Kaepernick would shake his head at you and simply pass the ball to Crabtree anyway. Eventually, we decided on the one button scheme, as we feel it more accurately reflects the decision making process that goes through Kaepernick's mind on the field when choosing which reciever to pass to from a selection of Michael Crabtree, Michael Crabtree, or Michael Crabtree."
But is EA taking things a little too far? Surely Kaepernick doesn't pass to Crabtree every time.
"We don't want to be viewed as exaggerating," added the executive. "We're aware that, once in a blue moon, Kaepernick does throw to another receiver, if the sun gets in his eyes and he mistakenly thinks that reciever is Michael Crabtree. So, when you press the Crabtree button, there is a 1 in 100 chance that Kaepernick will randomly pass to someone else instead, likely resulting in a turnover, just like in real life. We hope that the shock and surprise felt by the gamer when this happens will mirror the reaction of viewers at home and players on the field when the unlikely event occurs in an NFL game."
Indeed, according to reports, the sophisticated AI will cause the players in Madden 14 to react realistically as well, with the surprise at being targeted by Kaepernick greatly increasing the difficulty of the catch. In an unfinished demo EA allowed us to try out, a ball thrown to veteran tight end Vernon Davis bounced off the astonished player's helmet with a comical "thwump" as offensive and defensive players alike stopped what they were doing to stare in amazement. The game's announcers mistakenly claimed that Kaepernick had attempted to pass to Crabtree, as no one at EA had thought to record voice actors saying anyone else's name.
Another 49ers specific improvement that may make it into the game is that, while playing as Kaepernick, the play clock will be hidden from the player, resulting in an increased chance of delay of game penalties. Also, in the event that Kaepernick is playing on the home turf of a team with a lot of crowd noise, Kaepernick's player stats will be replaced by those of disgraced Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez.
Madden 14 is expected to be released in August 2013. The special 49ers edition, which comes with the modified controller, will retail for $99.95, the same price as a hot dog at Candlestick Park.
