Dan Didio dramatically revealed the origins of DC's controversial and traumatic decision to relaunch the universe in DC's The New 52: Friday panel.
According to the co-publisher, the origin of the relaunch began last October when discussing how best to draw the DC Comics line out of a self-admitted stagnation. Twenty-three DC employed writers were called in for a retreat to discuss the DC Universe. The writers discussed the loss of epicness and excitement in the DCU and how the universe had resorted to a bunch of talking heads. It was commonly agreed that some sort of change had to occur.
Also discussed was the Super-marriage, which was a topic of hot debate. Many writers agreed that the Super-marriage had caused the Superman books to become complacent. Eddie Berganza stated that it was time to take some things away from Superman, starting with his underwear and his wife. [Outhousers' Note: Judging from the preview pages with DCnU lothario Jonathan Carroll, DC's also decided to take away Superman's dignity as well.]
As sales figures dipped towards the end of the year, DiDio decided that something had to be done. That something was to reboot the line. While DiDio initially planned to not renumber Action Comics or Detective Comics, DiDio's mysterious corporate overlords told him that no one would take him seriously if a book was spared. Thus WB killed the large numbers that we fans have come to expect on the corner of the two oldest DC titles.
