Ha! Exactly!

While I was having fun in my post, I really am serious about this: What hurts Superman most is that he doesn't actually do anything specific that readers can hang their hat on and say, "THIS IS SUPERMAN."

Superman hasn't been written like he's an example of tolerance in society. He hasn't been written as an example of virtue, of heroism, of sacrifice in the name of the greater good. He's been a reluctant superhero for years.

He hasn't been written as a leader in the fight against evil -- if anything, far too often he's been written as this reactionary, borderline loser who keeps looking for the bright side when clearly there's nothing redeemable about Metallo or Parasite or Luthor. Then he cries when something doesn't go his way that winds up being a tragedy.

Do I want to read Superman as an a-hole? No, I don't. I don't think it works if you make him "Apollo-lite." But I do think there's a lot of room for a Superman who actually uses his powers more aggressively, with a little more irritation/emotion behind it, than there has been in years -- if ever.

I mean, seriously. It's OK to punch Darkseid REALLY, REALLY HARD. Nobody's going to hold that against you. Those Omega Beams hurt!

DC even addressed this in Infinite Crisis when Johns had Batman say that the last time Supes had inspired anyone was when he died, but the character continued to plod along afterward (with the notable exception of the Up, Up and Away arc). All-Star Superman then appeared and showed what could be done with the character, thereby making the Superman from the monthly books seem still less effectual.

Yep. Man, we need a whole lot more of "Burn" and a whole lot less of "Slouching Superman wondering what Lois Lane is doing while General Zod is stepping on his head."

Nieto, that is the PERFECT word to describe DC's handling of Superman. A plodding, dense oaf who reacts too slowly, too indecisively, to be of any real use.

Superman is so afraid to lead the way, hoping instead to "inspire" people. Unfortunately, his "inspiration" is to waffle around and be totally ineffectual. That has to be a way to be bad ass and still be Superman. Someone needs to remember that almost every song written about Superman are by people who have never understood what the hell Superman is about. Emotional drivel that seems to have given us the crying, emotional lightweight currently starring in the title (unless they pull him out of the book again-- that's happened a lot recently).
