A look at some of the most anticipated comics coming out this week!
I thought a good way to kick Wednesday off would be to talk about what comics we're looking forward to the most this week. Be sure to check back later this week to see if the comics lived up to the hype.
Dial H #1: Probably the most hyped book of the week,
Dial H is the latest offering from DC's strong horror line. Written by novelist China Mieville, the series is a reboot of the Dial H for Hero concept, which starred various protagonists gaining plethora of powers through a mysterious dial. Of the six "Wave Two" series coming out this month, Dial H could be the closest thing DC gets to a non-Vertigo Eisner nomination, something it's been sorely missing for several years.
The Spider #1: I know nothing about the Spider. However, I do know a thing or two about David Liss, whose ability to write an enjoyable noir comic is unmatched. While a part of me still longs for a sequel to
Mystery Men, I have no doubt that
The Spider will be just as awesome (if not more so) than the rest of Liss's work.
Earth Two #1: While you'll find no bigger fan of the original Justice Society,
Earth Two intrigues me for one reason: Nicola Scott. The preview images released so far have been absolutely gorgeous so far. This wouldn't be the first DC series that relies heavily on its art to get by, but there's still a chance that James Robinson, who brought the JSA back into the limelight twenty years ago, still has the stuff to make the newly reimagined Golden Age heroes shine.
Mind the Gap #1: Speaking of gorgeous artwork, Jim McCann's newest Image series features a hearty helping of beautiful art by Rodin Esquejo of
Morning Glories and Sonia Oback from
SHIELD (does anyone remember what happened to that book?). From what I read of it, the plot was pretty enjoyable, although it does read somewhat like a TV pitch (which makes sense because it originally was).
X-O Manowar #1: I have no idea what Valiant is, but I've heard nothing but good things from those who enjoyed the 90s. I'm intrigued.
Last Week's ComicsThe Goon #39: A bit heavy-handed and cruel.
Aquaman #8: Pretty awesome.
American Vampire #25: Also awesome.
Popeye #1: Langridge didn't disappoint.
Battle Scars #6: The Coulson cameth. That is all.
