Disney Announces Avengers Sequel, Theme Park Attractions at Disney World

Shocker!  The Avengers will have a sequel!

Despite a modest opening of a kajillion dollars last weekend, Disney announced yesterday that an Avengers sequel was officially underway.  Bob Iger also reminded the world that the sequels to Captain America, Thor and Iron Man were also in the works and would be released prior to Avengers 2.  Iger refused to answer any questions about the plot or release date, citing that all the money Avengers had made was making questions difficult to hear.

Interestingly, Iger also announced that Disney planned to open up several Avengers-themed attractions in their theme parks.  Currently, Marvel properties only have a modest presence at the Disney parks, mainly in the form of merchandise in various stores.  What this means for the Florida-based Universal Studios theme park, which has a Marvel section complete with comic book store, remains to be seen.

Islands of Adventure is cool but there are literally like only two cool superhero rides, the spiderman thing and the hulk coaster...i will gladly trade that in for some more disney rides

I miss Pleasure Island. That was the section that was for 18 and over only and was all bars and comedy clubs. That place was awesome!

I wonder what kind of merchandise we can expect. After all it's common for Disney to sell the coolest stuff only within the park.

I hadn't realized until I went last week that they got rid of all the clubs at pleasure island. It's all restaurants and shopping now, so lame. I went out with my mexican poncho on cinco de mayo around 1 AM and there were more cops waiting to kick people out of the boardwalk then there were people hanging out.

Adventure Club was a favorite.

Leave Disney World alone.

Open up something here in Hawaii.

The Castle can either be Latverian or Asgardian...

Disney Aulani resort here already has a lot of Stitch influence.

That creep Stitch moved on to Okinawa in the cartoon though. :smt011

Funny is the supposedly John Carter pulled in some money thanks to Avengers because it was attached to a lot of Drive In double features.

1) Universal has exclusive rights to the charactes in theme parks on the east coast, so any attractions will likely be Disneyland based, at least according to what Universal was saying when Disney bought Marvel. Their contract has a few years left on it.
2) Marvel is only one of, I think, five "islands" at IoA. And it's NOT the most popular even, not since a certain British magical schoolkid moved in. Potterland is already in the midst of expanding: they are connecting Potterland to Universal Studios, the other park. The area that used to be the Jaws ride is becoming Diagon Alley, complete with train to shuttle you back and forth.
3) If (when!) The marvel contract ends, I expect universal will make a STRONG pitch to WB for the DC characters. I imagine universal can offer them more $$$ than Six Flags, after all.
