TV Week in Review 5/13/12 - Nikita, Supernatural, Person of Interest & more!

Postby LOLtron » Wed May 23, 2012 6:56 am

Nightfly lists his preferred picks from last week's primetime Television.

TV Week in Review: Farewell Edition
  (week of 5/13/12)

What few shows didn't air finales last week are most likely airing them this week. It seems fitting timing that as this TV season wraps up so too does my weekly column writing for The Outhouse - the house that gave me my start. My columns will live on, though, at a new venue but more about that later.
With finales filling the screens last week the only list placement that surprised me, as it had nothing to do with a lack of competition, was Disney's Shake It Up landing in the middle of my Top 7 Outstanding Sitcoms list for an especially hysterical episode. Disney's new series TRON: Uprising blasted into my Favorite Teen Shows top spot with its preview episode (its entirety is embedded in my list below), it tied for first place with a game changing epi of Nick's Victorious. ABC alone earned two spots on my Top 7 sitcoms list, while FOX and The CW exerted dominance in my hour-long scripted category. The CW's two Top of the List dramas were particularly explosive as was the Person of Interest season finale on CBS. No net earned dual placement on my Reality Shows Top 7 list, still, cheers go out to the Sklar Bros. for snagging its top position for a second consecutive week since debuting.

A number of shows are premiering over the next few days as the summer season kicks into gear. Tomorrow (Thursday 5/24) Men at Work *, Duets *, So You Think You Can Dance *, Season Three of Rookie Blue and the controversial new TLC series Tattoo School all premiere. Friday (5/25) brings the debuts of Scandalicious * (on Logo), Mystery Diners (on The Food Network) and new Syfy reality series Insane or Inspired? co-hosted by Amber Benson. Get a Coming Soon GetGlue sticker by clicking the asterisks next to select titles (above).

Now onto my last batch of preferred primetime TV picks chosen for The Outhouse.

Last week I watched a grand total of forty-seven and a half hours of primetime TV, exactly six fewer hours than the week before. With summer now starting I doubt there'll be many more weeks over forty hours for awhile. Twenty-seven were spent watching hour-long scripted shows, eight hours went to scripted half-hour sitcoms and the remaining twelve and a half hours got directed towards reality series. The only series I accidentally missed last week was Sand Masters from the Travel Channel (I wouldnt've missed it if it were available online or OnDemand).

The various networks' upfront pick-ups have trailers viewable now online, so if you're interested in what Fall will bring you only need visit a network's website to preview what's to come. For this farewell column I've chosen to feature a pair of trailers from The CW and one from Syfy.
First up is superhero series Arrow (about DC's Green Arrow for those who don't know), beneath that is a clip for Mamie Gummer's upcoming medical drama, Emily Owens, M.D..

The third TV preview I recommend screening is for Syfy's Defiance, a futuristic new series starring Jaime Murray, Grant Bowler and Julie Benz (as the mayor of Defiance) involving space aliens in a shared universe with its MMO game. Watch The Making of Defiance below. There's no way I'm missing this one!

The movie trailer impressing me most last week was for The Words, starring Zoƫ Saldana, Olivia Wilde, Jeremy Irons, Dennis Quaid and an Alias reunion via Ron Rifkin and Bradley Cooper. It looks very engaging.

As this is the last poster I'll be featuring in a WiR column here, I'm happy it's for my all-time favorite superhero, Batman. Read about this newly released one-sheet for The Dark Knight Rises here.
Dark Knight Rises
* See three (even newer) character one-sheets here. They're wet.

GetGlue geeks, like me, may want the following stickers. For films in theaters and VOD I found glue for Apartment 143 (now available OnDemand and in theaters June 1st), Collaborator (on VOD 6/19, in theaters July 6th), Chronicle (now on Blu-ray), Safety Not Guaranteed (premiering 6/8) and an Elizabeth Shaw character sticker from Prometheus (hitting theaters June 8th). Carrie Underwood released a sticker last week in support of her live tour. Beyond the Coming Soon TV stickers listed in this column's opening paragraphs they also have new ones for (by premiere date) The Catalina (5/29), Hell's Kitchen & MasterChef (6/4), Push Girls (6/4), as well as Take Me Out  and The Choice (both debuting 6/7). Consider also grabbing these for Hallmark original movie Hannah's Law, True Blood and one celebrating the first season of ST:TNG finally landing on Blu-ray. GG also made a cool new one available for Game of Thrones' Battle of Blackwater. Comic book glue new from Marvel came for Hulk Smash Avengers #3, Avengers Vs. X-Men #4, Incredible Hulk #7.1, Uncanny X-Men #12, Avengers #26, Avengers Academy #30 and Fantastic Four #605.1.

It's been a lot of fun and an invaluable learning experience writing here the past few years (since July 2010) but it's time to start the next chapter in my online writing pursuits. Very soon I'll be relaunching my weekly columns at Geek Nation. I only started column writing because kind fellow Outhousers encouraged me and supported me through their readership, comments, and, answers to each column's trivia game (big ups to avengingtitan). Special thanks to Lord Simian and Jude Terror for allowing me to call The Outhouse a permanent writing home and for giving me my column-writing start, I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for you guys and I don't plan to disappear. I hope you'll all consider reading my columns at GN soon too. Thanks so much for the memories, Have a Great Week & Happy Viewing! :-) I'll be seein' ya.

Did Geek Nation sign you to an exclusivity deal? Why are you not able to just cross post your column? I do not even know where to find Geek Nation.

No way in Hell was Supernatural even on the same level as Nikita and Person of Interest. I'm a HUGE Supernatural fan but this whole season has been a disappointment. And that episode sucked a fat one compared to the other season enders Supernatural has done.

Thanks for all the work over the years Nightfly, and good luck at the new place! We'll be sure to publish a news release when the site launches.

Nightfly will always be welcome to contribute here, and I'm sure he will at some time in the future as his schedule allows. Personally, I'm proud that the Outhouse has been able to provide him and any of our writers a place to hone their craft for all these years.

Not much of a link - prompts me to enter my e-mail address before I can access any content. That is highly suspcious to me.

I'll now be using their guidelines, formatter, server, etc. They're not requiring me to be exclusive so I'll definitely ask about your idea. If both sites are up for it I'd love to have my column cross posted.

Geek Nation hasn't launched just yet but you can follow all developments on twitter and Facebook.

My editor there wrote a book about Batman called, Batman and Psychology: A Dark and Stormy Knight. You can find him on twitter and Facebook too.
I was kindly invited to join GN by my twitter friend Katrina Hill (a.k.a. Action Flick Chick).

I expect it to be a cool site. I hope you'll give it a look once we launch. :D

That was the longest most info filled trailer I could find for it at the time. It does look interesting.

My perspective is surely colored by the fact that this was my first season finale for this show. I'd never seen an episode until Marsters & Charisma Carpenter guest starred together. I've since seen some (not all) of the past seasons' finales but this is the first I've watched live. I appreciated its level of craziness and action and I've been surprised at how much I'm diggin' Castiel's new attitude.

I can see your point, though. The status qous were changed a bit more on Nikita and PoI, no doubt.

It's been awesome having The Outhouse as my writing home. Contributing to the frontpage here has opened cool doors for me and inspired me to branch out in fun new ways I wouldnt've ever expected (like joining twitter to get the word out about my column).
