The First Watchmen Retcon?!

Postby LOLtron » Thu May 24, 2012 10:51 am

Outrage!  Outrage!!

Although DC claims that its soon to be released Before Watchmen miniseries are love letters to the classic Alan Moore tale, many are afraid that the series will simply distill or cheapen what's considered to be one of the greatest comic books of all time.  This week, DC gave many Before Watchmen detractors the first of what's sure to be many complaints about their controversial series.

DC quietly distributed a promotional one page edition of The New Frontiersman, the conservative newspaper often read by Rorshach in the original Watchmen series.  The promotional paper, which is currently being sold on eBay by suave and sophisticated speculators, can be seen below.

nf1

While at first glance, the photo may seem to be a nifty, fun promotion, there is a more sinister revelation hidden on the page.

New_Frontiersman_2
Right next to the date of August 2nd, 1977 is a web address leading to www.thenewfrontiersman.net, a tie in website originally designed to promote the Watchmen movie.  Those saavy in Internet history will recgonize that this predates the incorporation of top level domain names for the Internet by eight years, which is when the first ".net" address began to appear on the World Wide Web.

This begs the question: does the Internet exist in the Watchmen universe? As the Internet was not used, seen or mentioned by any of the characters in the original Watchmen universe, it can be safely presumed that creator Alan Moore had no intention of bringing the scum and depravity to his perfect Watchmen world.  This being the case, it's the opinion of this journalist that DC has once again slapped Alan Moore across the face and made an integral and devestating change to Watchmen.

This is not the first time that a promotional item has been used to attack Alan Moore.  The rift between Moore and DC began when DC refused to pay Moore royalties related to several "promotional" pins related to the DC event.  Is this "promotional" poster another twist of the knife in Alan Moore's back?

We asked Lord Thaddeus P. Hoppinbottoms, a British citizen and Alan Moore fanatic, on the effects this newspaper has on Watchmen.  "The very fact that DC breathed on Watchmen is an insult enough!" he said "But the fact that they added the Internet, which is the worst thing to happen to mankind since slavery, is unacceptable!"

Stay tuned to the Outhouse for more on this developing story.  If you haven't had a chance to check out this abomination against Watchmen, be sure to stop by your store or buy it online from one of these saavy online dealers.  Remember, demand will only increase for this hot item as outrage grows.

 That's pretty retarded of DC

I hope I'm wrong, but I just do not have any faith in this Watchmen thing being any good.

I have a feeling we are going to see maybe one gem out of this whole fiasco and that will be about it, but I'll invest in all of it just to help drive Moore even more apeshit bonkers then he already is. :-D

I've got it good. I look forward to making Alan Moore cry and I'm one of the few actually looking forward to getting these books.

I hadn't thought of that...

I firmly believe all of these books are going to be crap, but so what? Star Trek 5 was crap, that didn't "distill or weaken" the original series. The episodes I loved, and movies 2-4, were still exactly as awesome as they were before. Same with these books: they don't change anything about Watchmen. It's still exactly the same book.

That said, you raise a good point. I am gonna buy two copies of every issue, just to annoy Alan Moore.

How many people do you know who don't like Star Wars as much because of the original trilogy?

Part of what made Watchmen so special was the self contained narrative. It's part of why it's so celebrated and lauded.

Do I know personally? None. My friends and I still quote the films, and I still am excited for the day when my child watches the original films with me.

I see what you're saying, but I disagree. And the self-contained narrative is part of why it's so lauded? I dunno about that, I have never read a review of Watchmen that praised the fact that you never see those characters elsewhere. :smt102

As I said, things like this don't change my opinion on the original work. And know who agrees with me?

Alan Moore. He said so, when asked about shoddy films based on his works weakening them: "They haven't weakened, they haven't changed. They're still right there on my shelf..."

Personally, I agree. I'm never going to read these comics

Doesn't change the fact that

a) For a lot of people the addition of new canon can weaken the original property.

b) This is a blatent cash grab, and the lowest I've ever seen a comic company sink to make dollar.

A) Then I would argue that they didn't truly appreciate the original, not if their opinion of it can be changed by something so easily ignored.

And
B) Then you haven't been paying attention. But then, you are very young. ;)
