One Million Moms Issues Follow-Up Statement on Comic Books

Postby LOLtron » Fri May 25, 2012 1:41 pm

A follow-up statement from the controversial conservative group.

Yesterday, conservative news group One Million Moms issued a statement condemning both Marvel and DC for condoning homosexuality in their comic books, which is sure to corrupt the approximately forty-two comic book readers under the age of sixteen.

Today, One Million Moms issued a statement further condemning the comic book industry for depictions of various sins in their publications.

Yesterday, our organization called for a protest of Marvel and DC for their outrageous and appalling depiction of "the gheys" in their comic books.  After issuing this statement, we decided to actually read some comic books and were stunned with what we found.  Comic books are a cesspool of awful, unbiblical behavior which has the potential to irrepairably corrupt our youth...FOREVER (ever...ever...ever....)

Take, for instance, Uncanny X-Men #8.  This issue features the character Namor EATING A SHELLFISH.  As Christians, we know this is a sin. (Leviticus 19:28).

Or, in Nightwing #93, when the character Tarantula rapes the title character in the book and subsequentially neglects to pay Batman the 40 sheckels owed in payment for taking his adopted son's virginity.  According to the Bible, a rapist must pay retribution and marry his/her victim (Deuteronomy 22:28-29).

Also, there's these uppity women in comics.  In Uncanny X-Men #508, Emma Frost speaks to Nightcrawler inside a church, directly violating 1 Corinthians 14:34, which states that no woman shall speak inside a church.  Is this the sort of behavior we want to promote in our children?  Females speaking in church?  Next thing, they'll be wanting to have careers or vote!

Then there is the seeming abundance of sinners such as Professor X, Jean Grey, Emma Frost, Dr. Strange, Dr. Fate, Zatanna, Dr. Druid, and John Constantine, all of whom are either psychics or wizards.  Leviticus 20:27 specifically condemns both and calls for them to be stoned to death.  We're stunned that there hasn't been a Stoning Special by either company yet.

Then, of course, there's the outrageous clothing that most of the characters wear.  According to the Bible, good Christians will not weave together the fabrics of two different materials. (Leviticus 19:19).  Does one really think that Captain America's stylish outfits are made of 100% wool or cotton? Outrage!

In summation, we highly encourage you to keep up the protest. If all one million mothers protest this, we might be able to affect these sinful companies' balance sheets by $100 or more!

This statement is satire and is not an actual statement from One Million Moms.

You should seriously try to pass this off as legit. Release it to news sites.

Except for Corinthians this is Old Testament, so it doesn't apply to Christians.

Interestingly enough, I posted a large post in their comment section on Facebook about this topic. I pretty much pointed out the hypocrisy of protesting gay characters in comics when they have ignored rape, dismemberment, and drug addiction for years. I even pointed out how ridiculous it was for them to bring Christianity into the debate since comics have been glorifying "Pagan" gods for decades and they seem to be fine with that. About 30 minutes after posting the comment I noticed that not only had my comment been removed but they had taken down the entire topic.

So, I just want to claim victory. I have successfully defeated "One Million (Give or take several hundred thousand) Moms." :-D

That was a pretty poor attempt at satire.

Those facts you're citing are from the Old Testament and are the laws of Moses. Most Christians don't follow those as they believe Christ's arrival on Earth was to change those laws. Christian "law" would come from the Gospels, not from the books of Moses. Christianity loosely follows the morality of those books but they do not consider them laws.

I also think you're making a critical mistake assuming that the basis of their argument is Christianity. If you read the statement on their website, it's about exposing children to sexuality. In my experience dealing with homophobes, not all of them are Christian. The majority of them are religious, yes, but I've met homophobes who are Hindu, Muslim, Jew and even Atheist. OneMillionMoms.com has nothing to do with religion and everything to do with "family values". Perhaps family values should be the focus of your piece.

I may not be your editor for the site, but I am an editor for this site and I do give up my time to ensure that the writing on this site is educated and professional. The writers I work with on the site spend their time putting effort into articles that inform and provoke thought with their readership. As a former op/ed writer and editor for this site, when I read this kind of article I shake my head because it deeply saddens me to think that standards I had wanted to see put in place for opinion pieces are no longer upheld by our writer and editorial staff.

I understand that you want to remain anonymous due to ill criticism received by many on the site, but please understand that this poor quality of work begets poor criticism.

I certainly can't speak for ThanosCopter, so I don't know if he is basing this satire off of their website or their Facebook page but I can tell you that prior to being removed, the comments on their Facebook page that were defending their stance against this issue where pretty ugly and heavily Christian influenced. If a person would disagree with their stance they were being told that they would burn in hell and other such comments.

Keb, as an FYI, One Million Moms references both Old and New Testament Scriptures in their statements. The OP is citing a specific line in the original statement that references New Testament scripture as to why they're protesting Marvel and DC. .

I did some further research quickly and found that they are an affiliate of some American Family Association or something like that, which is a Christian-based organization (founded by a Methodist pastor). However, the basis of their protest or call to action is "family values", obviously to some they think it's Christian family values but I believe it's so vague that to lump it as strictly Christian is erroneous, similar to equating Islamic extremists with all Muslims.

And as Thunderstorm pointed out, it's mostly old Moses law that ThanosCopter is going on. Even the scripture from Corinthians is not regarded by most Christians as something to take literally, and is greatly misinterpreted by the author in the case of their "satire".

Canada may be different, but Christian sects here at least can't seem to really agree on what specific scripture they profess to follow or not follow, so it's hard to generalize a set of their specific beliefs. Generally the rule of holding others to a higher standard than you aim for personally is the key.
