GLX gives his take on Grimm Fairy Tales Oversized Cosplay Special.

Comic Review Cover

Credits & Solicit Info:

When Baba Yaga gives a writer the unusual power to control those he writes about, the incredible gift proves to have consequences far worse than he could have imagined. Meanwhile Baba Yaga has long sought control over the nexus and Earth itself and she may have finally found the one item that will reveal the secrets of the universe to her. One which will allow her to stay one step ahead of all her enemies. This issue features some of the top cosplay ladies in the industry and takes place during one of the biggest conventions in the Southwest: The Phoenix Comicon!

Writer - Raven Gregory
Penciller - Alex Lopez
Colorist - Milen Parvanov

Review:

There are certain types of people that go to conventions based on such things as science fiction and comic books. Professionals, retailers and fans make their way to these conventions for various reasons. While most fans arrive at these conventions in normal attire, there are fans known as cosplayers that make their presence known. They wear costumes that they've worked long and hard on, before wearing them at these conventions. Cosplayers themselves are usually portrayed in various media in small roles, usually for comedic effect. For that reason, it's surprising to see a comic like Grimm Fairy Tales Oversized Special hit store shelves that has cosplayers as the main characters.

It's obvious while reading the comic that everyone involved with its creation had fun. The portrayals of the cosplayers and the folks from Zenescope are done for their amusement, even if they're shown in a less than flattering fashion. There's even a section in the comic that gives the reader some info on Raven Gregory and the cosplayers. Though those involved with the comic might've been entertained in its creation, the comic itself fails to entertain.

What occurs within the comic doesn't progress naturally. Instead, things just happen. While thebizarre events of the beginning are explained, the reason for their occurrence feels tacked on. The characters lack depth and act more as tools to move the plot forward instead of distinct voices that further enhance the comic. They're used to invoke things like laughter and arousal, but Gregory's attempts to do so are forced. It's as if Gregory had to find a way to not only include characters based on the cosplayers and the employees of Zenescope, but also to mix in something related to Grimm Fairy Tales.

Alex Lopez and Milen Parvanov handle the art and they do a fine job of translating Gregory's script into art. The characters are true to their inspirations without trading personality for realism. There are some parts when the art falters a bit, but the positives outweigh the negatives.

Grimm Fairy Tales Oversized Cosplay Special is inadequate as a comic. While this was not made to be a deep work, the comic fails to deliver something to counteract its shallow nature. Fans of Grimm Fairy Tales and the people who are given fictitious portrayals within the comic might find something to enjoy about Grimm Fairy Tales Oversized Cosplay Special. Nonetheless, casual readers will have a hard time finding something entertaining about it.

SO I took a look at this thing today, yeesh! I can't decide who came out looking worse in this, comics fans or cosplayers. This would be the perfect gift for the Punchy on your Christmas list. The only thing I got out of it was now I know that Zenescope writer Raven Gregory is a dude and not a goth girl like the name brings to mind for some reason. This comic was like chocolate-covered herpes.
