Ant-Man and The Wasp #1

Image

A NEW SERIES FROM MARK WAID & JAVIER GARRON! Wasp was just trying to help Ant-Man get home to Earth to see his daughter...but a little problem got in the way. Very little. Subatomic, in fact, as Scott Lang was lost in the vast spaces between atoms! Now, Nadia is his only hope of rescue…if only he would listen long enough for her to save them! From master storyteller Mark Waid (CAPTAIN AMERICA, CHAMPIONS) and Marvel Young Gun artist Javier Garrón (SECRET WARRIORS, STAR-LORD) comes a story of a big journey getting smaller all the time!

Digital copy can be found here.

Ze rules:

Post your review in the forum thread or in the comments section here on the front page.

Review as often or as little as you like. Once you've posted 5 reviews, you will be awarded 1 pick. You can post 5 reviews, right? That's a totally achievable goal and with day and date digital releases becoming the standard, it shouldn't matter if your shop ordered enough copies of this weeks comic or not.

When multiple Review Groupers have posted 5 (or more) qualifying reviews, they will be awarded their pick in the order that they qualified. What constitutes a qualifying review? Any review posted (with a score on a scale from 0-10, that's right 0!) within 1 calendar month of the thread going live. Reviews are to be at least 5 sentences long. It shows that a) you have at least read this week's pick and b) you have some unique insight into the comic.

Reviews posted while waiting in line for your pick will be applied to your next pick.

I'll be keeping track of everyone's progress with the newly christened Spreadsheet of Fantastic (RIP, Spreadsheet of Doom) and reporting the results in the Current Members list in the weekly OP. When it's your turn to make a pick, I will PM you. If you do not respond to me by Midnight EST the following Sunday, you will lose your pick and I will start a poll to determine that week's selection.

Any week in which we do not have a Review Grouper with 5 qualifying picks, we will determine the week's comic via poll.

If it's your week to pick, remember to keep it at $3.99 or under.

Ant-Man and Wasp #1

Humor abounds as Ant-Man needs a ride home from another galaxy and super-smart-Nu-Wasp builds a ray for him to Adam Strange himself back to Earth. Comedy ensues and Scott ends up in a weird place with a Marcelinesque vampire who sucks the color red out of things. Hilarity ensues and Wasp gets some new red contact lenses or something.

+3 because I'm a Scott Lang fan.
-1 point because I'm not a Nadia fan.
-2 because there are too many geniuses in the MU now, Nadia being another one makes me even less than of a fan.
-43 because Scott Lang is now a doltish simpleton

Waid's usually a must buy for me - this one just ain't doing it for me.

There were 2 Ant-Man Wasp #1s out this week, one for each wasp. You'd almost think there was a film coming.
This one is with baby wasp Nadia. And ties into Scotts recent status quo of being in space. But not his status of being believed dead, again. Anyway Scott needs to get home for Cassies birthday, and because the novas can't take 5 minutes out to fly him back (nice to see Adsit btw) he calls and asks Nadia to invent a star trek teleportation beam for him... so she does!?! Shenanigans involving space colour vampires ensue. If you ignore the wonky even by comic standards premise, this is a fun odd couple pairing which could continue nicely... although id rather see a Nadiawasp - Cassie team up if I'm honest. 6.5/10

A short review of this issue would have me say something along the lines of, "I really liked this." I would then say that I thought that it deserved a rating of 7 out of 10.

This group requires a bit more than just a short review like that though. With that thought I'll say that I liked the way Nadia and Scott interacted. It was clear at the beginning that Nadia didn't have much respect for Scott. It was fun seeing that change over the course of the events between the covers.

As for the story itself, it was an alright, but not spectacular start. Most of this pages of issue were taken up with showing how the two title characters got themselves trapped in the Microverse. Once there they dealt with a foe that didn't come across as a danger that will take up the whole length of this limited series. It was fun and made me want to read the rest of the story though.

So, as I stated in the final sentence of my opening paragraph -- 7 out of 10.
