Review:

I Spy a Kirby Crackle in the Glimmer most part of my Eye, and damn it feels good!

A couple years back, I had the pleasure of sitting next to Erik Larsen at one of the Wizard World L.A. comic conventions in Long Beach. He was attempting to finish some pages, hoping that no one would recognize him. Fat chance! The honor only lasted for about a minute and a half before dozens of comic book fans eagerly passed over my small indie mini-comic efforts and swarmed Larsen. Just as quickly and randomly as Larsen sat down at the abandoned table next to us in Artists' Alley, he was gone with ninja speed after talking with some of those fans. Had I had the chance to ask him what was next for his flagship title, Savage Dragon, damn would I have been floored by the epic proportions of the Dragon's shenanigans! Today we have those answers in the form of Publisher Image Comics and creator Erik Larsen's Savage Dragon: Emperor Dragon.

The comic phenom opens with that Kirby crackle that I love so much, and two old-school characters from Dragon's Freakforce days who are trapped in another dimension...typical, right? Comics as usual, right? Wrong! I'm not going to spoil it for you beyond that opening scene, but Larsen throws everything but the kitchen sink at you during the rise and fall of his Dragon character, which is now taken over by the Emperor Kerr persona. Take a trip down memory lane as long-time readers get to discover the fates of Dragon's family and old-school character favorites. Remove jaw from floor as readers witness what happens when you oppose the one with the fin on his head and a badass God complex. No one gets out alive here, and I mean no one!

The art is quirky and over-the-top fun. I hope no one ever accuses Larsen of being a Da Vinci, or a Michaelangelo, because where would be the fun in that? More importantly, where would be the fun and energy in the pages that Larsen so consistently tests our jaws with? In this fan's opinion, readers and artists should consider buying two copies: one to clip out the many kinetic action scenes that pop off the page, and the other to keep by the bedside when you need something to spark an interesting night's worth of crazy dreaming, because I guarantee you'll wake up with a crackle and wishing you rocked the fin!

Well? Anyone else want to discuss the epic of Dragon?

I remember buying the first 3 issue limited series when it was a Malibu comic!
