Power Poll: Week of 7/27/11

Postby LOLtron » Wed Aug 03, 2011 9:39 am

Which book was the top comic book last week as determined by the Internets?  Click to find out!

In 2010, a weekly Power Poll was conducted at the Outhouse to determine the top comic of the week.  Unfortunately, the Power Poll was abandoned as its creator left for bigger and better things.  However, good features rarely die...

LOLTron, the robotic caretaker of the front page took the Power Poll's smouldering carcass and rebuilt it, making it faster, stronger and more aware.  For several months, the Power Poll lay dormant, building its strength and learning more about the wide world of comic book reviews.

Now reborn, the newly created PollTron has come back to the Outhouse, collecting data from reviews spread across a half-dozen different comic book websites.  Once a week, PollTron collects this data and aggregates it, assigning scores based on the total number of positive reviews gathered from its ever-growing database of websites.

The Power Poll for 7/20/2011

1) Detective Comics #880 - 9.735

2) Uncanny X-Force #12 - 8.07

3) Amazing Spiderman #666 - 5.5325

4) American Vampire #17 - 5.125

5) Criminal #2 - 4.66

6) Captain America and Bucky #620 - 3.41

7) X-Men Schism #2 - 3.3675

8) Venom #5 - 2.995

9) Secret Warriors #28 - 2.8225

10) Mighty Thor #4 - 2.5

Analysis: This week was actually a pretty close week in the Power Poll.  Although no book reached the level of acclaim that Daredevil #1 did last week, there were far more positive reviews of several books.

Going into Monday, Detective Comics #880 and Uncanny X-Force #12 were in a practical dead heat for first place.  Detective Comics #880 ended up taking over the top spot, with positive reviews from every website sampled in the Power Poll.

Uncanny X-Force #12
came in a close second, earning the top spot in the Outhousers' Book of the Week Poll as well as high marks from IGN, ComicVine and Comic Bulletin.

Coming in third was the prelude issue of Spider Island.  Amazing Spider-Man #666 earned top marks from CBR, IGN and Weekly Comic Book Review, although it was given mediocre numbers by the Outhousers' Review Group, which prevented it from competing for a higher ranking.

Rounding out the top five were American Vampire #17 and the latest installment of Criminal.  American Vampire, in particular, almost pulled an upset over Amazing Spider-Man, but couldn't beat the book due to a lack of reviews on smaller review sites.

Top Overall Books

1) Daredevil #1 - 13.73
2) Detective Comics #880 - 9.735
3) Uncanny X-Force #12 - 8.07
4) Amazing Spiderman #666 - 5.5325
5) American Vampire #17 - 5.125

On an unrelated note, the Power Poll welcomed three new additions to its database in order to get a better sampling of reviews.  IGN, ComicVine and Starlord's new Review column here on the Outhouse all were added to the secret formula.  In addition, PollTron made a slight correction to the formula, which overweighed one of the websites, leading Daredevil's composite score to drop to a still impressive 13.73.

The New and Improved Power Poll reflects the Internet's collective opinion of various comic books using a unique formula with scores gathered across seven different comic book websites.  While Outhouse reviews and opinions are weighed slightly higher (as the Outhouse is the foremost opinion of comics on the web), the Power Poll also takes into account the opinions of many of the Internet's finest reviewers.  Scores will be updated over time to reflect the addition of more reliable sources and the deletion of inferior ones.
