Ah, Brian K Vaughan, you’ve been gone too long. After last week’s Avengers Academy brought back some of his most famous creations, this week features the return of the real thing in BKV’s brand new series from Image. It’s been heavily hyped, and while it’s not quite the industry-saving lightning rod you might have been expecting, it’s still a damn good comic and Vaughan is still a fantastic writer. Saga drops us right in the middle of a massive space war, but still manages to keep the focus tight and in the space of one issue, has me already loving these characters. The idea of two people from warring sides falling in love is not new, but Vaughan imbues the setting with so much depth and life that it just feels real. You just know that there’s a whole Universe out there for this book to explore, and I’m excited to see it. This issue already featured more cool stuff than most comics have in a whole year, like the weird robot sex scene or the bounty hunter with the talking cat or the awesome winged dude. Fiona Staples’ art is very good, and she crucially manages to make the out-there designs of the alien races not seem goofy, under a different artist’s pencil this stuff would look very childish, but here it works. I also really liked the way that Hazel’s captions were worked into the artwork, it was a very effective technique. This was just a good comic, and most importantly, it’s a new idea. We need to support books like this and Saucer Country, new concepts. Yes I love reading Avengers and Green Lantern, but variety is the spice of life (and comics) and so whilst it was cool to see the Runaways return, their time is done, and this is the BKV project we should all be behind.

In what way? He couldn't have possibly known that the other thread couldn't be seen by Punchy.

It's pretty common knowledge that Bubba has me on super-ignore, after all that c*nt-rag stuff.

And to call me self-important is an insult, especially when I wasn't being self-important.
