A review of the soon to be released comic by Michael Moreci!
Kickstarter has become the main avenue for funding a self-published book. The concept of crowd-funding attracts both prospective and established creators, and has helped many comics get published after being passed over by a major publisher. The main "flaw" with Kickstarter campaigns is the uncertainty that surrounds the final product. When purchasing a book from Image, Dark Horse, or any other "independent" publisher, readers know that the book has been vetted for and reviewed by professional editors. However, Kickstarter campaigns rely largely on the salesmanship and pitching ability of the creators, there is a real chance that the comic you ultimately pay to see printed could end up being a dud.
Luckily,
Reincar(Nate) #1 by Michael Moreci and Keith Burns isn't one of those books. Moreci graciously allowed me to take a look at the first issue to let me make my own decision whether to support or pass on the book's Kickstarter campaign. Reincar(Nate) follows Nate, a private detective who suffers a near-death experience as a result of being marked for death by an infamous gangster. While recovering, Nate is forced to deal with some unexpected consequences of the attack, shifting the book's tone from gritty crime drama to a mind-bending thriller.
There's a lot to like about
Reincar(Nate). Nate's a likable protagonist that is a bit more than the standard "private gumshoe" caricature I'm so used to seeing in crime/detective stories. The hook is pretty intriguing as well, and will grab those who enjoyed Bendis'
Moon Knight and
Who is Jake Ellis. In fact, the only real flaw I can find- besides the fact that it won't be out for a few more months- is the name of the gangster who had ordered the hit on Nate. It's hard to believe that a gangster named after a species of bear that wants to go extinct is a threatening character, but I have enough faith in Moreci to keep an open mind.
Reincar(Nate) is a great independent comic which holds its own against peers such as
Criminal,
Who is Jake Ellis, and
Chew. It's a perfect blend of gritty crime drama and the surreal. If you want a chance to read
