Maybe it was just me, but I have really gotten the feeling over the course of the movies that Coulson has appeared in, that he is gay. In the Iron Man and Thor movies it was really just a background thought... but in Avengers, it seemed much more so to me.

Maybe it was the way he interacted with Cap, fanboy is one thing, but Coulson seemed to be almost fawning over him... Maybe it was him being so utterly dismissive of Tony Stark... Maybe it was Pepper being so very familiar and almost protective of him, like they shared a secret... Maybe it was a glance I am sure I saw him give to Thor, checking him out... but it really seemed to gain traction when it was mentioned he was seeing a Cellist, but no name or gender were revealed... like it was purposefully left ambiguous...

I could be wrong, and it certainly has no effect either way on how much I love the character, Coulson is the fucking Man... but if its true, he could become the first openly gay action star in a major motion picture franchise of that scope, which is beautiful in and of itself...

I mean, Dumbledore is gay, but you don't find that out until the very end of the last book... and he is more the kindly old teacher, not the action star superspy that Phil is... If they reveal Coulson to be an openly gay character, one who is so clearly beloved, in a franchise of this size and popularity, it would be groundbreaking and barrier smashing...

Did anyone else get this feeling, or am I just completely off base here?

I don't remember this Coulson. Was he in the first Iron Man movie? I haven't seen Iron Man 2, Captain America, or any of the Hulk movies yet. I figure I should probably watch at least IM2 and Cap before going to see the Avengers.

He was the guy working for SHIELD in the first Iron Man. He helped Pepper at the climax of the film.
