Guess Avengers Assemble does resemble the movie *SPOILERS*

Postby sdsichero » Wed May 09, 2012 7:41 pm

Thought they were just using the movie characters in Avengers Assemble, but I guess they are having it relate to a certain aspect in the movie starting with issue #3...

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD FOR AVENGERS ASSEMBLE #3 AND “Marvel’s The Avengers”—PROCEED WITH CAUTION

Avengers Assemble: The Return of Thanos

Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ problems just went from bad to cosmic, as Thanos revealed himself to be the mastermind behind the new Zodiac in AVENGERS ASSEMBLE #3, on sale now.

“Since we designed AVENGERS ASSEMBLE to be a nice, easy entry point for people coming out of the film, for all that it still exists within our current Marvel Universe, it was a bit of a no-brainer to have Thanos be the villains behind our first storyline,” shares Marvel Senior VP – Executive Editor Tom Brevoort. “More than simply bringing him back, this storyline will be setting him up for bigger things that are just off on the horizon—it’s the first step towards something we’ve been working on behind the scenes for a while now.”

“He’s a villain of such power and stature that he can give the Avengers a fight all by himself,” he notes. “There’s no such thing as a small Thanos story—he operates on an intergalactic scale. And he’s a fascinating, nuanced character, with passions and neuroses all his own that make him stand apart as an individual, and not just a cookie-cutter moustache-twirler.”

I guess that image is from the inside of the issue? (it also says 2011).

EDIT: Damn what was I thinking when I wrote the title?

I thought that was where they would go with it. Good to see.

So this isn't an illusion this time? This is really Thanos?

It's just a comic. Not "really" Thanos.

Hmm, I get books from MOC so I ordered the first 3 sight unseen. #1 was so boring that I didn't bother with #4. :smt102

Wait, doesn't Avengers Assemble take place in actual Marvel Universe continuity? If so and if Thanos has returned, then Nova (the real one, Richard Rider) and Star-Lord can't be far behind! :smt026

I would hope that is true but I would not hold my breath on that one. I think with those two it would depend on if there is a need or interest to bring them back. Thanos was the money shot from the movie to carry interest into this series.

I picked this up today because of that last page reveal. I still do not understand how this book fits into the normal Marvel Universe Continuity though. Especially this version of the Hulk being absolutely nothing like the version of Hulk that is currently in Incredible Hulk.

My hope would be that by bringing back Thanos, they will have to provide a reasonable explanation for how he escaped the collapse of a dying universe. Surely, if Thanos could escape then Nova and Star-Lord could as well.

It's Bendis.

The books not bad I just don't see the need to put it in continuity. I think it could be a stand alone universe and it would work better I think.

After just this 1 issue, Bendis has already done more to build up Thanos as a character than Starlin did.
