Title: The Newbie

Marvel Newbie, need some help please

Postby Kcrizzy17 » Fri May 11, 2012 3:09 pm

Hello, I have just resently got big into buying, reading, and collecting comics and I haven't really purchased any marvel yet. I have been currently reading the Green Arrow, Green Lantern, and Flash comics from DC. With the release of the New Avengers Movie I have decided to start buying some Marvel comics, but I'm not sure where to start. I know basic things about marvel characters, but I'm not sure where to a good starting point is for the comics I wish to read.(Iron Man, The Avengers, Captain America, and Thor) If anyone could help that would AMAZING! Also, if anyone would like to suggest some other comics and starting places, feel free. Thanks you!

For Cap I'd recommend starting with the Winter Soldier story. It makes sense of a certain character who you probably won't recognize running around the MarvelU but should. It also soft reboots Bucky.

For Iron Man I think Most Wanted is as good a place as any. It showcases alot of his armors and also leaves Stark rebooted as well.

I hadn't read Thor in a long time myself and started up again with Thor #1 by J. Michael Straczynski. Just be sure to drop it after he leaves the book. Fraction and Abnett make it confusing as fuck.

Captain America - Start with Captain America: Winter Soldier Book 1 trade by Ed Brubaker.
Iron Man - Start with Invincible Iron Man: Five Nightmares trade by Matt Fraction.
Thor - Start with Thor by J. Michael Straczynski trade.
Avengers - Instead of going by Avengers by Bendis you might want to pick up the first three issues of Avengers Assemble (also by Bendis) since that resembles the movie in certain ways.

You mean Kieron Gillen. Dan Abnett wasn't on Thor.

According to Amazon Abnett wrote for Thor during the World Eaters storyline which was the most atrocious confusing shit ever that didn't have Grant Morrison's name on it. :smt102

Regardless OP, when you get to World Eaters just stop.

Straczynski 1-12, 600-603
Gillen 604-614
Fraction 615- current.

Yeah just stop with Straczynski's run.

Yeah just stop with Straczynski's run.

For the newb: "Straczynski 1-12, 600-603" doesn't mean JMS wrote the first 12 issues and then started up again 600 issues later. It means Marvel is run by dipshits who at first relaunched all their titles back to issue one then changed their mind and went back to the old numbering system a year or two later.

For Avengers, I recommend trades of Avengers/Defenders War, Korvac Saga, and Galactic Storm.

For Iron Man, definitely Demon in a Bottle and Armor Wars.

For Captain America, The Captain and The Bloodstone Hunt.

For Thor, the trades featuring Walt Simonson's entire run.

These work well. I'd also recommend Avengers: Under Siege and Avengers: Ultron Unlimited, Cap: Death of the Red Skull (just came out) and Cap: Operation Rebirth.

Was JUST about to add Under Siege and the Morgan Le Fay Contract... and I should have thought of Ultron Unlimited.
