The Avengers has been breaking a lot of records, but does it have the stamina to go the distance?

The Avengers continues to validate the tastes of comic book fans, but does it have a chance of becoming the highest grossing movie of all time? Let's check the charts over at BoxOfficeMojo.com and see what the chances are...

The Avengers had the highest grossing domestic opening weekend of all time with $207M dollars, beating out former record holder Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. Avengers also now holds the record for highest second weekend domestic gross with $103M, beating out the former champ, Avatar. The Avengers also holds the top per theater average gross for it's opening weekend domestically, beating out both the limited release Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus Concert movie (which opened in only 600 theaters) and the similarly wide-released Harry Potter 7.2, with $47K per theater. Avengers also holds the record for highest gross on a Saturday with $69M, beating out Spider-Man 3, and the highest gross on a Sunday with $57M, beating out The Dark Knight. Finally, The Avengers holds the record for highest domestic 3 day, 4 day, 5 day, 6 day, 7 day, 8 day, 9 day, and 10 day grosses.

On the worldwide scale, The Avengers is now the 11th highest grossing film of all time, and is expected, by next weekend, to reach number 4. It's almost a sure thing that Avengers will be able to beat out the third highest grossing movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, which has $1.3B under its belt, but what about the top two, Titanic with $2.1B and the reigning champ, Avatar, at $2.7B? Avengers has had a stronger start than Avatar, but it also experienced a higher drop from the first to second weekend. At the same time, Avengers still made more money in its second weekend than Avatar did.

At the end of the day, the contest is more of a marathon than a race. Avatar stayed in theaters for a year, and sucked in viewers with flashy new 3D technology and the promise of naked blue furries. Titanic recently saw a return to theaters. Avengers will need to stay in theaters AND hold the interest of moviegoers for just as long if it intends to make another $2B and take the crown, which could be difficult with so many other comic book movies due out this summer, such as The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises.

In the world of movie grosses, nothing is ever certain, but if fans can count on one thing, it's that even if The Avengers does become the highest grossing film of all time, they're still not going to bring back Joss Whedon's Firefly.

Don't know if it can, but wouldn't be SHOCKED if it did. I know that there's been a lot of repeat business for the film. Lots of fans seeing the film multiple times (myself being one of them.)


So, it would be cool if it does beat out Avatar but in the end, it's still awesome that it's done so well.

Though there is a lot of creator rights issues with Grog and Mog both claiming that they are the original creators while Krog only had the plot of the lesbian velociraptor assassin squad, but that was eventually chipped from the wall due to length constraints.

It would have to make over billion more dollars to do so, but I don't think that is a definite no. Looking at the figures and movies ahead of it right now, Avengers sits and #11, it may not beat the all time record but I could see it cracking the top 5 possibly the top 3.

It will certainly be number 3. It is expected to be number 4 after next weekend, and Harry Potter (current #3) is only $300M ahead of it right now.

This (plus the positive reviews over Cabin in the Woods) should make Whedon A-List.

This almost certainly means Doctor Horrible 2 and almost anything else Whedon wants to do. Fan-fucking-tastic.
