After four weeks of domestic dominance, Marvel's The Avengers has finally been dethroned by the debuting Men In Black 3.

Men In Black 3 opened up this weekend to an estimated $55 million, knocking The Avengers of the top of the box office charts for the first time. After setting a new record Saturday for shortest time to reach $500 million domestically (23 days) and having the second highest fourth weekend gross of all time, Avengers pulled in an estimated $37 million dollars this weekend, bringing its total domestic gross up to $513 million. The movie is expected to overtake The Dark Knight ($533 million) by next weekend, becoming the third highest domestic grossing movie of all time. Worldwide, Avengers sits at $1.29 billion dollars, and is in place to become the third highest grossing movie internationally by defeating Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 ($1.32 billion) soon.

However, the chances that The Avengers will overtake James Cameron's vagina-fueled masterpieces Titanic and Avatar are now looking pretty slim, unless, of course, Marvel is willing to take drastic action and generate new interest in the movie, perhaps by making shocking changes to one of the characters' sexuality. Unfortunately, the comic book industry is not known for taking those kinds of risks.

But will MiB3 keep up to holding the top spot as long as Avengers?

Besides, we all know Prometheus will be the biggest film.

Had to happen eventually. But that isn't a really great opening for a franchise like MIB. Seems maybe the luster has tarnished a bit for Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. And there will likely be a big drop-off for it next week; I doubt it will hold anywhere near as well as Avengers.

As for the summer title, I think it will be between Avengers and Dark Knight Rises. Sorry Cat, Prometheus might do well, but not on those levels.

Avengers has already won the title, there is no more competition even worthy of a fight this summer.

Just tried to go see Avengers and it was sold out, but there were still plenty of seats available for the same time showing of MiB.

Wife asked if I wanted to see it instead, which I didn't.

Meh. I think Smith's a damn good actor. If I hear a film of his is good, I'll look forward to seeing it.

But Eli Katz is an elite aesthete of the highest order, and I myself find most hyper-modern Hollywood movies too boringly manipulative to watch.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm a bit of a film snob too. I can barely tolerate most mainstream "let's crap this out and see if we make some money" movies. But Will Smith DOES have some films where his charm is the sole saving grace and actually makes the film tolerable and possibly enjoyable.
