Harbinger #1

Postby Eli Katz » Tue Jun 12, 2012 1:34 pm

I know this is just a retelling of the '90s story, and not an original book, but I picked up this issue because Josh Dysart (of Unknown Soldier fame) is writing it. I'm happy that I did. It's a very well-written book. I'm not sure how much this new series will deviate from the original. I hope that Dysart is given the freedom to push in new directions, because I think this could end up being a very strong book.

Based on this first issue, Harbinger looks very promising.

It riffs a little on Harbinger 0 but shows more of the behind the scenes with Toyo Harada. I was always a Harbinger junkie.

It was a good first issue. Frankly, Valiant's reboot is everything DC's isn't so far---which is mostly to say good, very good.

With Bloodshot, Archer and Armstrong, Eternal Warrior, and maybe a Ninjak monthly, (I can't tell if that promo is for his own title, or just an appearance in XO---Valiant is making a great start. Next they need Shadowman, Armorines, Hard Corps, and at least Dr. Mirage.

Plus, they should make another effort to get back at least Solar and Magnus to complete their universe, (does anyone know if they own Quantum and Woody).

I would like to see Hard Corps rebooted. I thought it had potential it never realized.

I'd asked Fred Pierce about it when I saw him a couple of months ago. I guess that the rights are a bit of a jumble on it. There's a distinct possibility the rights reverted back to Priest and Bright.

I would rather they concentrate on a few titles than try to support 8 monthlies. Let people demand more books and make sure there's a need for them.

I'd like them to stick with five (maybe six if the sixth was Shadowman) and build steadily. The demand from the Valiant fans is there for sure.

I would love a Shadowman ongoing. I agree with no more than six titles (and that's frankly pushing it). Ninjak would not have been in my six but hopefully they'll have some good ideas for it (which would be an improvement over the original character, who was kinda lame). It would be even better if he just showed up in X-O or got a limited series.

Keep it so Ninjak's a behind the scenes character for now.

The first thing they need to be sure they do is build up the heroes and the villains. Use Ninjak to reestablish WEBNET and Dr. Silk.
