Catching Up w/ DCnU - Batgirl

Postby S.F. Jude Terror » Thu Jun 21, 2012 1:07 am

So I've finally had a chance to start reading some of the DC Relaunch books, nearly a year later, series by series, all in one shot. I've never been a big Gail Simone fan, having not read much of her work (in fact none I can think of other than her Deadpool stuff). This comic was actually pretty decent. I guess I don't have the fanboy obsession with the Bat-chick characters in order to be highly offended by her reboot or by other sexy teens not getting the Batgirl spot. It was... decent. There was some corny monologues, which is what you're gonna get with a chick writing I guess. :P Overall though I enjoyed it, so I'll keep reading.

Obviously, you're some skinny, single nerd living on the East Coast who probably derives value in life from wrestling matches, hoping that Wolverine gets to sleep with teenagers and engaging in casual drug use. You're literally the worst thing to happen to comics since Stan Lee.

Yeah, I have all the issue so far and can't think of a single reason why these stories were deemed so utterly important as to have or need Babs back.

They've been OK... but just that... OK. Nothing groundbreaking or even bordering on GREAT. There's been nothing done to, IMO, justify removing Babs as Oracle who I have always thought was a far superior character to her Batgirl.

I think the attempt at being a "survivor" over-whelmed the flavor of this title for a while but once Babs could just focus on the villain-of-the-month it started picking up steam. For example last month's Night Of The Owls issue #9. And I'm a tad curious about this new Knightfall person/team/whatever so I'm in for a while yet.

Batgirl is the best DC comics I'm buying right now. I love how Gail handles issues like Babs having PTSD and the theme that you can't really escape the past. (i.e. Babs' mom and brother)
