George Perez spills the beans on Superman and DC

Postby Juan Cena » Sun Jun 24, 2012 1:34 pm

George Perez basically confirms all your worst fears about the Nu-52.

On why his Superman story was such a clusterf**k
DC approached me, actually it was Dan Didio who specifically approached me, at that point I was going through my preliminary eye surgery, and my wife was getting concerned I was having trouble focusing on artwork, and maybe doing something where I didn;t have to draw all that detail would have been a way for me to earn money and give my eyes a chance some recovery, so writing, I was loathe to do, because my last experience with writing,,. Unfortunately when you are writing major characters, you sometimes have to make a lot of compromises and I was made certain promises, and unfortunately not through any fault of Dan DiDio, he was no longer the last word, lot of people making decisions, going against each other, contradicting, again in mid story. The people who love my Superman arc, I thank you. What you read, I don’t know. After I wrote it… I told them here’s my script, if you change it, that’s your prerogative, don’t tell me. Don’t ask me to edit it, don’t ask me to correct it, I don’t want to change something that you’re going to change again if you disagree. No no, Superman is a big character, I was flattered by the responsibility, but I thought this was getting a little tough.

Not shocked at all about this one. Perez is probably talking about Time Warner suits here.

And of course, there's Morrison.

It was what they had promised me in the New 52 version of Superman,

I had no idea Grant Morrison was going to be working on another Superman title, I had no idea I was doing it five years ahead, which means, my story I couldn’t do certain things without knowing what he did, and Grant wasn’t telling everybody, so I was kind of stuck, who exists, DC couldn’t give me answers. Oh my gosh, you’re deciding all these things and you mean even you don’t know what’s going on in your books… so I became very frustrated…

And this, my friends, is why the Nu-52 will bomb in the end.

What do you mean "will bomb in the end"? :smt011

It already has... with a few exceptions.

Wait.. no Herald? Disappointed Herald. VERY disappointed. Come back to me newton. I hate DC more.

I'm not surprised. Harras and Didio are infamous for this.

With the exception of a handful, the reboot has been a clusterfuck of epic proportions.

But I'll say this for it.. the books that were hits, were ones I either was not reading before, or that are better now than they were before. So, it's kind of a win-lose.. they lost overall, but I'm reading more DC than before, so.. yay?

Batman
Batman & Robin
Batman, Inc.
Nightwing
Batwoman
The Flash
Wonder Woman
Demon Knights
I, Vampire
Justice League: Dark
Swamp Thing
Animal Man
Green Lantern (although, it's headed for being dropped)

Everything else is just terrible. There's not even varying degrees of quality.. it's pretty much all crap.

i'd say that Birds of Prey was better than terrible (although thanks to Foreman, i've dropped it too), and the two new E-2 related books are pretty good early on. but other than that, yeah my list is pretty much exactly yours.

I'm in a similar boat (in terms of reading more DC books now than I was before and in thinking a lot of the line is crap). Even with things like "getting the superman continuity straight", I'm not sure I can call it a failure. I'm reading more DC books I enjoy and my LCS has been very happy with the relaunch. :smt102

I think it's a failure because the strength of the line overall seems weaker.

I mean, I'm not reading the books that are shit.. but at least you didn't rely on 90's has beens, and Rob Liefeld to write 75% of your line pre-New52, desperately trying to emulate 90's Marvel/Image. That just screams of creative bankruptcy.

So on principle alone, even if I wasn't reading the books and still am not currently, the Old52 was in a better position.

Is ANYbody surprised at this "revelation"??
Anyone besides the Dan and the Gang sycophants, I mean??

DiDio-era DC was demonstrating this sort of piss-poor mishandling BEFORE they started to bring in the ill-considered '90s Marvel/Image "creators". And those guys' arrival is when things REALLY went to pot.

Clearly, not one of yours, though. :P

Sometimes, it's like Dragon Ball Z. You have to wade through the Gohan/Krillin/Vegeta preliminary bouts before ol' Goku appears to mop things up. 8)

I'd say most of those are good except I would have to disagree with your characterizing Nightwing, Batwoman, The Flash and Green Lantern as being good. They all have great artists but the writing is just meh at best.

The thing is when you look at it. Only Justice League: Dark and Demon Knights are the true hits. You knew DC would throw their best into the rest, but those two? Those two are total surprises. Like freak accidents in the swarm of returned 90s garbage.

I, Vampire?

And come on, when is Wonder Woman ever this good and successful?
