The secrets behind the Nu52 Hawkman
Newsarama has an interview with Rob Liefeld about his new arc on "The Savage Hawkman" and what's in store for Carter Hall.
When the DCU relaunched last year little was known about Carter Hall's past. Even by himself. Issue #1 started with Carter attempting to burn and bury his Hawk outfit so apparently he already was Hawkman, although he wasn't publically well-known yet. The Nth Metal,in the harness and wings, had other ideas and embedded itself into Carter. Now when danger looms the metal erupts out of him, forming his Nu Hawkman armor. The first arc was focused on Carter learning to control this new ability as he continually battled assorted aliens bent on gaining the Nth Metal for themselves. Hints have been dropped about the history of the mysterious metal leading Carter on a journey to figure out what his true role is. And was.
Last month's issue #9 showed a mysterious red-haired woman unknown to Carter attempting to send a transmission to him through the Nth Metal itself. Her garbled message only being: "K-tar ...Th--g--r".
According to Liefeld about that scene, if it's meaningful, and if she really
is Shayera:
Yes, she is a very meaningful character and her eventual arrival sets up important revelations for Carter as well as the next arc. There's always hope. And change.
The next arc shows Carter as he begins to discover who he is, where he came from, why he posseses the Nth Metal, and what his true role is to be. Liefeld also promises some answers in issue #0:
"We went BIG and received approvals all down the line. #0 reveals Carter's past to both him and the reader simultaneously. At the end of #0 Carter will know where he came from and why he is here. He might not know how exactly he got here but we have to leave some pieces to play with in future issues. But yes, many big revelations are made in #0."
Pike, introduced in this week's issue #10, will be furthered explored in #11 as well as the mysterious St. Bastion who is tied to the mysterious scrolls that Carter has been trying to decypher. And Emma, Carter's business associate, will continue to be a supporting character.
Liefeld wouldn't comment on if we'll get to see Hawkman in the upcoming "Trinity War" event although the
FCBD promo art seems to confirm that.
BIG thigs are coming for Hawkman. Based on Liefeld's previous titles, could that be big pouches ? Big belts ? Big muscles ? Big weapons ?
This September will start to answer these and other
big questions.
