... 12 inches with 8 inches.
Okay that only sounds gay.
I was talking a cake my father ordered, an 8 inch and the store gave him a 12 inch. So how do you mix up those two completely different sounding words aka numbers? Really it's almost like a scam to get more money out of you or to move a larger more expensive cake. But then, he doesn't like chocolate and wanted a mocha cake. It was the only one. Sheesh.

Maybe they thought your father was being modest.

How would they get more money out if him? If he ordered an 8 inch, and that's what his receipt said, and they screwed up, I should think it's either on them to correct the issue for him or give him the 12 inch for the 8 inch price?

Insanity was another answer.

He paid anyway as there were no smaller versions. The order slip said 12, I guess. My father is over 70 and can sometimes be like a 7 year old kid when he makes mistakes. He starts rambling or changing his story. Kinda sad, kinda funny but I was sort of pissed off as it increased the price but means more cake then he could really eat and it's bad enough that also like a kid, his eye are bigger then his stomach when it comes to sweets.
