I got something cool in the mail.

Postby Zenguru » Sun Jul 01, 2012 5:26 am

Last Tuesday I ordered a book, and Friday it arrived.

A 2004 edition of "Seduction of the Innocent" by Frederic Wertham.

I will now step back to let your jealousy seep inside my pores.

Well, I just can't believe you aren't up on your "incredibly stupid things Americans did 60 years ago" trivia, Rui!

I don't know what they teach you in your schools over there. :smt011

Cool book. I recall checking a copy out in college and trying to read it. As people said very dry.

For the record, it was this nut Wertham's attempt at proving how comic books corrupted young minds with their evil stuff. Basically an attempt to drive comics out of business or at least censor them. The shame is that it largely worked---to an extent, and for a fairly long while. Their were Congressional investigations, (proving BTW that Congress was always a place for idiots), and it led to the establishment of the Comics Code Authority.

The main themes were "ooh, sex, violence in comic books!" No shit Sherlock...

Then it went on to say that Batman would turn the kiddies gay or something. I don't know, the dude was pretty crazy.

Thanks for the explanation, it seems to be a book of historical importance to the north american 9th art evolution.

Yep, Wertham had the audacity to claim there were homosexual undertones in Batman & Robin's relationship, earning him the ridicule to this day of comics fans and creators alike--despite how often they reference those same homoerotic interpretations themselves.

"Wertham was a moron!"

"Huhhuhuh, Batman and Robin are so GAY!"

Let's not even get into how many people today decry the content in comics as being too adult for kids, many here on these forums.

But Wertham is still the long-dead bogeyman from 60 years ago.

I'd love to read that book, but can't condone dropping $50 or more on it and I seldom see it less than $50.

Yeah, that's why I stopped looking for it.

Although, I think I found a digital copy, now that I'm thinking about it... Gotta throw that on the Kindle...
