BroNYcon Summer 2012: Recollections from the Show Floor (Saturday)

Postby LOLtron » Tue Jul 03, 2012 7:35 am

Now that BroNYcon is over, all that's left is the reporting. Join us The Outhouse as SilverPhoenix begins a MASSIVE wave of coverage with his recolletions of the first day.

Summer 2012 BroNYcon: Saturday Recollections from the Floor.

I've never expected, nor experienced this. Not only does it make you feel alive, but it's a humbling experience like none other

Summer 2012 BroNYcon

The unexpected is something that we've been geared towards expecting since we were old enough to understand the concept. With the way life has a way of interfering while making plans, being adaptable to scenarios that we do not anticipate is a very useful skill. Usually such words are used to soften the blow of unfulfilled hopes, but what happens when your expectations are exceeded beyond imagining? You get the first day of BroNYcon 2012, and boy was I glad I got it.

When I was making my way to the convention, my cynical side took over. For a stretch of a couple years, there wasn't a major Northeast Anime Convention that I missed, and with each convention I would hype myself to think that it was going to be "the best convention ever" creating expectations that could only foster disappointment. As I was riding the bus to the hotel, I commented to my friends on how it would've been hilarious if someone dressed in Cosplay got arrested. With my expectations set to such a low level, I was now ready to survive what probably would've been another 2 days of stress, grief and broken promises.

By 10:00 AM, I had nearly forgotten that I had downplayed this thing on the bus ride there.

From the minute I stepped onto the Convention grounds, there was a special feeling in the air. The same type of electricity that makes going to Conventions worth it in the first place, as nothing feels impossible and even the mundane is crystalized into memories that last a lifetime. As I was setting up for opening ceremonies the convention goers I met were full of friendly enthusiasm that would be the theme of the entire weekend, and even one helped me figure out the basic rudiments of a video camera beyond pressing "Record and Stop", and although his effort was for naught due to an incident I'll someday look back on and laugh, making a friend like that out of the blue was just one of the many awesome moments of the weekend.

Speaking of awesome moments, I couldn't help but be blown away by the sheer amount of love that was given to the guests of honor at virtually every moment of the Convention, something that was taken to another level whenever THE Guest of Honor made an appearance on the main stage. When her name was announced a both Opening Ceremonies and "An Hour with Lauren Faust Panel" the crowd erupted with an earth-shaking cheer that was filled with some of the most sincere love and admiration that I've ever been a part of. If you didn't think "Friendship is Magic" didn't capture lighting in a bottle before, you might be inclined to think differently during those panels.

The rest of the day never leveled off, as the feeling of sheer joy permeated through virtually everyone on the grounds. From the amazing guests of honor, to the talented artists and craftsmen plying their wares, to the skillful Cosplayers of all types, to the dutiful staff, and last but not least to the fans that came dressed as they are. However, the moment that stood out for me was running into old friends and having them greeting me with such enthusiasm. It was at that moment that I truly realized that this was going to be a great convention, no mattered what happened. From there, the rest of Saturday was an adventure between catching up with friends, getting into mischief, drinking pony themed drinks and going to After Parties that never happened. As I finally rolled out the couch and got myself to sleep, I wondered what would be in store for me during day 2. Stay tuned to this website to find out.

I doubt any of those pictures are of Zechs. He's probably hiding in the background, still ashamed. He's not come out of the Brony closet yet.

At least there are girls in these pics.

It's the guys over 12 that I find weird.
