Comics Rant 001

Postby pazos001 » Mon Jul 16, 2012 11:41 pm

SO I have been trying to catch up on the mainstream storylines from comics and I am lost. It seems everyone is rebooting again in a desperate attempt at making money while yet again trying to update continuity and I am reaally intimidated. The last comics I read monthly were The Maxx and Kelly Jone's Batman so let me try to figure this out: So now, there's a Batwoman, there is a Red Robin that is not actually Robin, Cyclops is a villain, Spiderman has an afro, Phoenix is dead again, McFarlane still doesn't draw anything, Crisis on Infinte Earths part 2 didnt really count and Wolverine has his ADAMANTIUM BACK?!?!?!

I'm a mess.

After a limited web release of my graphic novel 'The Bends: One Shot' on graphicly.com ( available here: http://grph.ly/Ox6npn ), I am looking for funds to print the first 100 copies to take to local comic shops. I have a rough quote from Ka-Blam for $350 to print the first 100 in a manga-sized format. If you can contribute you will get your name printed on the back credits page. How cool is that?

I don't read Spider-Man, so I can't comment on the afro. But yes to those other things.

Oh and Alan Scott is gay.

You should have just stayed reading your old comics.

Spider-Man and Mary Jane aren't married anymore. Gwen Stacy had sex with Norman Osborn.

Good idea!

I get more fun from reading old books than the shit they churn out today.

Hmm, at first glance I would say that today's quality looks substantially better than the 90's, especially due to digital progress... but that's just at first glance.

I've been reading a lot of classic marvel as well as revisiting old stuff from the 90s that stunk (like Spawn) and I have to say that between the 90s stuff and what I see today, I'm not really that much more inclined to read current comic books.

Yeah, things are so much more confusing than the early 90s. Why did they have to bring in confusing plots and blatant money making schemes in the intervening years.

I'd just stick to independent series and stuff that by the big two that is outside continuity.

When I was collecting during the 90's "Grim and gritty/polybag" era, I thought the 80's stuff was cooler. I used to look at the Jim Shooter era of Marvel in awe. I did like Frank Miller's stuff from the 80s but not the Miller-derivative grim and gritty era. Comics like "Bone" and "the Valiant Universe" were refreshing at the time. Spawn was for the art because McFarlane's writing was a headscratcher... on Spiderman and Spawn. The guy was drunk with power calling the shots at Spiderman and getting all of the leeway. What an apex for an artist. Enviable.

Valiant's relaunch is kicking ass right now.
