Interesting piece.
Personally I love the Internet bitching. Part of what made CW so memorable for me was all these fans screaming bloody murder that so-and-so wasn't in character; or that Clor was a horrible idea; or that Cap would never surrender, under any circumstances, period.
How often do you see so much passion over a story? Not too often. So I think the comic book sites and message boards have really enhanced the reading experience, at least for us hard-core fans. We have an outlet to vent and praise, finally!
It's also neat when you see creators jump into the mix and argue with fans. For a while on the Rama, Dan Slott had this ongoing debate with one of the most passionate detractors of BND. It was fun reading. It's also interesting to see creators like Erik Larsen comment on Marvel or DC creative decisions.
