Fashion Beast # 3 - Moore, McLaren Percio

Doll is out there, roaming the streets, unaware of some very real urban dangers. Soon, Doll is attacked by a group of conservative people who despise transvestites; dressed up as suburban men and women from the 50s, they brutally beat up Doll.

What is the origin of this aggression? Isn’t it a futile attempt of counterattacking the gender and sexual transgression carried out by Doll? Doll’s crime, if such a term might be applied to her actions, is to pose herself as a transgendered individual. If a man cross-dresses as woman he’s desacralizing the image of the mother, because women’s body became sexualized centuries ago based on her role as a child bearer. The concept "hysteria" was invented as a result of sexual problems. So it’s only logical that traditional people that think in terms of sacred motherhood should have hysterical and violent reactions when confronted with someone like Doll.

If we consider that genre is, besides a cultural referent, a “corporeal field of play”, then it is quite evident that society will impose strict punishments for those who defy the tradition by performing freely, without concern for sex and gender. After surviving the attack, Doll returns to Celestine’s Headquarters. And sees a large manifestation of people that are against the fashion industry. This anti-fashion brigade share the same outdated clothing style of the people who harmed Doll.

Doll, then, gains access into the heart of the Celestine building. And it’s there when she speaks with the legend, with the powerful patron of fashion, with Celestine himself. The founder of the most powerful fashion empire decides to promote Doll as his main model. In the end, it doesn’t matter if Doll is indeed a girl or a boy that dresses up as a girl, all that matters is that she will become the object of admiration of millions.

Doll and Tomboy are in constant contact with the sedimented expectations of gendered existence. As Judith Butler would explain “there is a sedimentation of gender norms that produces the peculiar phenomenon of a natural sex, or a real woman, or any number of prevalent and compelling social fictions”, this sedimentation includes the things that men demand from women, whether in the past or in the present; the result is a “set of corporeal styles which, in reified form, appear as the natural configuration of bodies into sexes which exist in a binary relation to one another”. ________________________________________________________________________

About the Author - Arion

Arion, who is either from Chile or New York (it’s not really clear) writes a blog that the Outhouse steals on a regular basis.  Arion is by far the nicest of all the staff writers and the most well behaved only having been banned from one country.  One thing we really appreciate about Aroin is that he writes his reviews in English and Spanish and we hope someday he’ll translate this blurb for us.  We’re not so good at languages, just look at how well we write in English if you need proof.  You should bookmark Arion’s blog -  http://artbyarion.blogspot.com – and actually look at it.  There will be a quiz at the end of every month.
