Arkansas-Texas A&M game brings up Aggies in the SEC silliness again

Arkansas-Texas A&M game brings up Aggies in the SEC silliness again

By Juan Cena in SWRT on October 9, 2010

Arkansas heading to College Station to face the Aggies of Texas A&M has brought with it the obvious story. That being the one about the Razorbacks bolting the SEC for the Big XII, and the Agggies taking its place. Oh child, please. The pain this time is brought to you by Hellspawned Javelinas, an appropriately named Aggie blog. "It’s a funny thing that South Carolina was accepted as a member of the SEC by rival institutions but Arkansas wasn’t. South Carolina was a last second fill-in for Texas A&M, which decided back in the early nineties not to leave the SEC until the near future, but South Carolina is considered one of the good ol’ boys, a brother in crime, a member of the SEC. What is so wrong with Arkansas?" You mean besides Ryan Mallett being overrated? Arkansas can actually be competitive, that's what.  As for this thing about South Carolina being "accepted", it's a little bit of a stretch. Given the choice of SCAR or Clemson in the SEC, the Chickens would be out and the the number of Tigers in the SEC wolfpack would increase by one. "The answer is that Arkansas brings nothing to the conference. The cigars are still smarting that they have to split money with Arkansas, a school that brings nothing more than half of the Texarkana TV market to the table. On the other side of the border, you have Texas A&M, a school twice the size of Arkansas, a school located in an area with 25 million more TV sets ready to tune into SEC football and throw money to the entire conference. Sure, the SEC got the raw deal, and they know it, and Arkansas gets all the blame." Not mentioned that the majority of those 25 million households would be watching the Texas Longhorns game. The reasons why Texas A&M shouldn't be in the SEC have been mentioned before.   Arkansas is the better program. And even if it did foolishly decide to bolt to the sinking ship that is the Big XII, replacing it with Texas A&M would be a huge mistake. Just know that the desirability of the Aggies in the SEC falls squarely in the search for fool's gold department. Your Ricky Stanzi "America, Love It or Leave It!" Moment of the Day: Stanzi+YouTube+Photoshop=Oh my!

By Juan Cena in SWRT on October 8, 2010

Iowa has a bye week this weekend. So what are Hawkeye fans going to do to for their weekend without seeing America's Quarterback, Ricky Stanzi on television? Well, there's always the internet. You-Tube and Photoshop together can be a scary thing. There's obviously somebody in Iowa/the Hawkeye nation with way too much time on their hands. Billy Gonzales stuck it to Urban Meyer with a "sticky note"

Billy Gonzales stuck it to Urban Meyer with a "sticky note"

By Juan Cena in SWRT on October 8, 2010

He could have slipped out the back, Jack. Or made a new plan, Stan. But former Florida assistant coach Billy Gonzales told Urban Meyer he was leaving his longtime boss to take a similar job at LSU in a way Paul Simon could never had imagined. He used a "sticky note."  (That's a Post-it note or some knockoff thereof, just in case you weren't sure what's being talked about here) Gonzales apparently wasn't too happy that he got passed over for the Gator offensive coordinator job that went to Steve Addazio. Okay. maybe wasn't that original of a way to leave a longtime boss. But it does show how strained the relationship between Meyer and Gonzales had become with Addazio's promotion. And it's now getting attention due to Florida's offensive struggles, along with LSU's more-lucky-than-good 5-0 record. (via Miami Herald, EDSBS) Originally Pubished at: Shirts With Random Triangles

Your Ricky Stanzi "America, Love It or Leave It!" Moment of the Day: The Tar Heels have a Grand Old Flag

By Juan Cena in SWRT on October 7, 2010

A lot of college football teams run out onto the field carrying the US flag. But the flag carried by North Carolina Tar Heel junior safety Matt Merletti is extra special. It's won that was flown in Iraq and Afghanistan by his brother, Captain Mike Merletti,  a US Army Ranger serving in the 101st Airborne Division. “We were e-mailing each other back and forth,” Matt Merletti said. “I told him, ‘I think it would be a pretty cool idea if you flew a flag for me on a couple of missions over there in Iraq, and gave it to me whenever you get back to the States.’” The elder Merletti did, and Matt began carrying it onto the field. When he was injured in 2009,  he had other Tar Heel players carry it for him.  Now healthy, he once again leads the team into the stadium with the flag, now with a few extra miles on it. "When the Tar Heels took the field in the Georgia Dome, Merletti again carried the flag his brother got for him. This time, it was a bit more well-traveled as Mike Merletti took it with him on his deployment to Afghanistan." Matt is considering following his brother and father into military service if he doesn't get drafted by the NFL.  (via Winston-Salem Journal, The Star) Originally Pubished at: Shirts With Random Triangles

Crossing the Atlantic: Mark Herzlich, Maryland, and ...tricycles?

"It's just a flesh wound." Boston College's Mark Herzlich reportedly has a broken hand. That's probably now going to stop him from playing, though. After fighting cancer, a broken hand shouldn't be that much of a problem. (<i style="color:
