In his first season as head football coach of Ole Miss Hugh Freeze saw his team lose to Texas A&M 30-27 in its first year in the SEC. This was a month or so before Texas A&M's starting quarterback Johnny Manziel exploded onto the national scene by leading the Aggies to an upset victory against Alabama, and then went on to win the 2012 Heisman trophy.
What does Freeze think of Manziel this season? He thinks JFF is "more of a complete quarterback."
Manziel leads the 4-1 Aggies to face 3-2 Ole Miss in Oxford, Ms. on Saturday.
"He wants to stay in the pocket a little more," Freeze said of Manziel, who leads the SEC in total offense (360.6 yards per game) and is second in passing yards per game (297.8) and passing efficiency (188.1). "He's confident he can make all the throws, and doesn't feel like he has to use his feet all the time.
"He's proving he's more of a complete quarterback -- not that he's afraid to (run). That's the part that's so scary -- that he's throwing it well also and if he has to use his feet, he's going to extend plays better than any I've ever coached against or seen."
